CONTINGENCY AWARDS
Drivers participating in the 2009 SCCA National Championship Runoffs will have more than $1 million worth of contingency awards to vie for. With a wide variety of unique programs available, drivers don’t necessarily need a win to walk away with big prizes.
Automakers American Honda, Mazda North American Operations, Toyota/TRD and Volkswagen of America, Inc., have all prepared generous contingency programs for the 2009 Runoffs. Honda plans to pay $500 to all registered drivers who start the Championship race in eligible classes. Honda winners will collect $1,500, while a second-place finish nets $1,000 and third place, $500. Honda will also reimburse their drivers $200 for participation in the Monday test day and $100 for parking. Eligible Mazda drivers will have $5,000 coming their way for a win, $2,500 for finishing second and $1,250 for a third-place finish. Select classes are also eligible for up to $600 in tow money from Mazda. GT-2 and GT-3 Toyota drivers are racing for $5,000 should they win a National Championship, or $3,000 for a runner-up finish. Toyota will also pay out $3,000 for a win and $2,000 for a runner-up finish in other select classes. A $1,000 bonus for pole position and tow money is also available for eligible Toyota drivers. Volkswagen too, is offering a $1,000 pole position bonus for their registered drivers. Touring 3 and Showroom Stock C drivers in Volkswagens can walk away with $5,000 for a win, $2,500 for second and $1,250 for third. Additionally, Volkswagen will pay $3,000 for a win, $1,500 and $750 for third in several other specified classes.
Tires are an important choice when a National Championship is on the line, so Goodyear Tire, Hoosier Racing Tire and Toyo Tires are each thanking their customers with handsome contingency payouts. A win on Goodyear tires is worth a $3,000 Goodyear certificate, with a $2,000 certificate available for a second-place finish and a $1,000 certificate for third. Hoosier will give winners using their product four free tires, plus four tires for each 2010 SCCA Club National entered and a Hoosier jacket. Spec Miata drivers registered for the Toyo program can expect payouts through fifth place, with $7,500 going to the winner. Toyo will also draw two drivers at random from sixth through last place to award $500.
Drivers can take away prizes not only for their tire of choice, but for the wheel it’s mounted on as well. Forgeline will pay out $500 for a win, $300 for second and $200 for third to eligible drivers using Forgeline wheels. Panasport Racing Wheels is also in on the action, offering Panasport gift certificates in the amount of $300 for a win, $240 for second and $185 for third, to drivers registered for their program.
Brakes are another large category of contingency programs, as Hawk Performance, Carbotech Performance Brakes, KFP Magnum Pads and Tilton Brake & Controls each offer contingency programs. Hawk will offer payouts for the top 10 drivers in a long list of classes, awarding race winners with a 2010 product sponsorship, which includes as many as 10 axle sets. As the title sponsor of the Touring 1 class, Hawk will pay the T1 winner $1,000, with payouts continuing through 10th place. Carbotech’s payout schedule also covers the top 10 in all but two classes, with a $400 product certificate and Carbotech caravan canopy going to National Champions using its products. KFP has posted for a long list of classes, offering a KFP certificate worth $200 to registered race winners. A $150 and $100 certificate are available for second and third, respectively. In all classes, Tilton will award registered drivers with one case of TB&C brake fluid for a win or fifth-place finish.
Over time, technology has become a valuable commodity for racers and the number of tech-based companies continues to grow in the contingency catalog. The popular online race simulator program iRacing.com has posted in all classes this year, offering a free one-year iRacing.com subscription to race winners and a $15 credit or a free one-month subscription to second and third-place finishers. ChaseCam, makers of in-car camera systems, has posted for all classes as well and will pay $150 to race winners registered for its program. Drivers who register for the DataToys.com contingency program will be eligible for a $300, $200 or $100 product certificate for a top-three finish.
Competition Data Systems has chosen to award prizes to first, fifth and 10th-place finishers in all classes. Eligible drivers can chose from a discount on the CDS Co-Pilot 2+ System or a product certificate for parts and upgrades to an existing CDS system. Prize values vary with finishing position. Race Technology USA has a similar program lined up with discounts on its DL1, DL2 and AX22 systems or certificates for parts and upgrades to existing systems available to first through third-place finishers.
A bevy of other contingency prizes are also available. Summit Racing Equipment, Grassroots Motorsports Magazine, SCCA Enterprises, Sunoco and Pace American are all offering cash prizes. GRM and Sunoco will each post $100 for a win in all classes and Sunoco will continue to offer a $50 prize to the hard charger of each race and as title sponsor of the GT-3 race, will pay cash awards to the top six finishers, including $1,000 to the winner. SCCA Enterprises payouts to the top three finishers are limited to Spec Racer Ford and Formula Enterprises, with a cool $1,000 going to race winners. Spec Miata racers can also expect $1,000 for a win thanks to Pace American, who will again be the title sponsor of the SM race and pay out to the top six drivers. AdvatangeWheelAlignment.com will post for fifth through ninth place, offering discounts on a Triple 3 alignment system and a toe gauge. defNder has opted to post discounts for first, third and sixth place. DefNder will also draw one driver at random to win a free defNder Head and Neck restraint valued at $549.
There’s plenty more free stuff up for grabs. Hyperco is posting free Hypercoils for top three finishers in eligible classes. Top three finishers in all classes can take advantage of product certificates from Red Line Oil and even a $700 custom racing suit for race winners. A new suit can be supplemented by additional safety gear from Racer Wholesale, which is posting a $150 certificate for G-Force products. Certificates offered by Pegasus Auto Racing Supplies can be used for any number of racing products and are available to registered fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishers in all classes. Taylor Race Engineering wants to make sure you don’t miss the podium in 2010, so they’re offering a $250 product certificate to fourth-place finishers in select classes. Tilton Engineering offers $75 product certificates to first and second-place finishers, and a $50 certificate to fourth and fifth-place finishers in select classes. Williams Racing Developments has opted to offer product certificates for first, fifth and 10th-place finishers in select Formula and Sports Racing classes. Open to everyone, RacersIMC.com posts its first program this season, rewarding winners with a free lifetime membership to RacersIMC.com.
