Default Hillsville, VA to VIR

Is Hwy58 as bad as it looks on a map, or worse?
It's 50miles longer to go down to Winston-Salem/Greensboro. Is it worth it if towing?

sorry I see you are coming from hillsville it would depend on what you are towing. Truck and trailer I would go 58 to martinsville an follow it to danville to track. If driving a big rig I would go to winston salem.

I would avoid using Route 58 if at all possible. You would have to use what I consider the worst part of 58, that section from "Lovers Leap" to Stuart,Va. Not an easy section to drive in just a car much less towing something. Can be plenty of fog on the mountain and not the most comfortable feeling trying to see where you are going.

Yeah, especially after seeing Jason's Ford tow vehicle.

I drive it ~ 30 times a year with the trailer and Corvette ... no problem. It is much faster than taking a 40-50 mile detour.

All the tractor trailer rigs run it as you should know if you're in Hillsville.

You only take 58 to the bypass to Martinsville then a little more of 58 to the Danville bypass. I think it is 92miles to Danville from Hillsville via. 58.

I roll on 58 from Hillsville to VIR every time I go.....From Ohio it is a significant mileage savings. Its not that bad going east there is alot more down hill than on th eway home.

What sucks is when you get stuck behind some farmer going less than the speed limit and you are unable to pass..

I will of course plan my usual early start allowing a leisurley drive, early arrival, easily making tech, and ample set-up time before dark.

I will then as usual leave hours later than expected, hammer on the truck as hard as I can all the way there, get there long after tech has closed and darkness has fallen, barely getting in before the track locks the gates for the night.

That last part seems more accurate!

Good news VIR never locks the gates but you will probably arrive just as the guard drives off to do rounds!

That happened to me at Barber once.

And FWIW, 29 down to Gboro, W-S, then back up through Wytheville seems like the way to go for me. 1 monster hill to climb at the VA/NC border, but other than that it's not too bad.
