Default Is This Aluminum Rear Wing Repairable?

Can this be repaired?
Im good at fabrication and repair, but never worked on an aluminum wing.
Are those standard rivets?
Can the rivets be removed and have the wing unfold to a certain degree?

you should be able to drill out the rivet heads and they will pop. I doubt you can straighten the aluminum but if you have it give it a try. You could always body fill it a tad and paint.

That is the rear wing from Tony Gaples C5 world challenge Corvette. If you can't repair it the shop probably will be able to. Call Ray at 1-847-634-7534. Tell him I sent you. Good luck!

I expect to need a little plastic filler. It would get painted, so thats not a problem.

Good catch. That is Tonys old C5 wing. I might buy it for a low price as is. We never discussed them doing the repair. Ill see what they say.

All these hits and no fabricators?

Does anyone know the thickness of the aluminum?
Are all brands the same?

The thickness could be anything, as well as the material alloy, there is more than 1 aluminum. you would have to know the original manufacturer.

We have our GT2 Corvette ALMS wings with bolt on wicker bill in stock and ON sale for $1495.

There is No better value in a full Carbon fiber, wind tunnel tested and good enough to out qualify the factory Corvette team

Really, give us a call and we can fix you up with a wing that is second to none.

Thanks

Lou g

That Aluminum wing came from "fabcar" in Indy.

There are "spars" that the skin rivets to. You will have to detach the skin and in side will be a tube with wing spars at each rivet location. As long as the spars and tube are not twisted or bent, you can re skin it.

Use a 5051 alloy because it will form easily and not crack in the process. Wings made with professional forming press would use a 6061 alloy because it won't dent easily and has more stiffness. BUt too hard to work by hand. Measure your old skin but it will either be .040 or .050 thick. ANy thicker will be too hard to work with.

you can start with a roller to begin to shape the skin but you will have to get it close to the shape of the spars.

Then get a standard countersink in each location of the old rivets.

There is an air craft tool that will allow you to fine the original hole on the spar and it will give you a pilot to drill the new hole in the skin.

Then when you are almost complete, take the trailing edge to a good clean cut shear and trim the trailing edge in one swipe.

There you have it.

Plenty of work, time and tools. But if you want the satisfaction of rebuilding it then have at it.

Feel free to call us.

Thanks

Lou Gigliotti

I could never get an aluminum wing like this to last more than about 8 weekends before the aluminum started getting fatigue cracks. If you need a wing to last and work, composite is a better choice in the long run.

Thanks for the valuable info guys. Especially Lou on the re-skin and alum bending specs. If I cant repair the outer portion, re-skin will be my next option.

I wanted a used and aluminum (I cant work with composite) wing because I plan to modify the wing and dont like to chop up new parts. Mods are needed so I dont have to drill permanent holes in the car body and it will be easily removable. Center supports will be relocated inward. Its for a street/track car. The wing will go on for track use only.

Ive got a side view showing the internals. Interesting as Ive never seen the inside of a wing before. Ill post a pic later for anyone interested.

Ill also post pics when the work is completed as I sure some are baffled with my plan.
