[vid] 130+ MPH Autocross
I just got back Sunday night from the 50th Annual Bay Bottom Crawl down on Sugarloaf Key. It's a 2.5 mile closed road with 9 cone stations with long stretches in between. Was in 3rd gear doing between 100-115 between stations 4 times and was doing 130 + across the finish.
6 or 7 cars wiped out on the very tight course.
With 3 drivers in my car, I was nervous to say the least.
What a blast!

Fast forward to the 1:27 mark on the next one for the actual start.

I've been to Brooksville several times this year, but not with Florida Corvette Racing. Every single one of their dates this year conflict with Gulfcoast down here.
I'll check again and see if there are any left before the end of the year that I can attend.
Edit: I just checked. I can likely attend the 11/21 event.

Hence why I was so nervous with 3 drivers in my car.

It's run every year the same holiday weekend. This year was the 50th.
They have an awesome reception Friday night and a really great banquet Saturday night (between the practice day and the run day). They have a vendor at the track making hot breakfasts and lunches, along with cold drinks.
A LOT of history to this event.
A nice weekend trip to Key West with some brutally fast autocross. What's not to love?

The "Crawl" was famous (or infamous) as a fast event that was a known car eater if you went off the road way back in the late 60's when I was in high school in South Florida...
I had a friend (Bill Shirtleff sp?) that spun his Elva Courier (full road race car) in 68 (I think it was) and ended up parked backwards with a tree sticking up where his trunklid used to be....
Never made it down to run it, but it looks like fun...

Man that's wicked. Looks fun as hell. I think my car would have eaten at least a few cones on that one...just so the trees wouldn't eat my rear end.

Oh this brings back memories. I was stationed on Boca Chica NAS in the late 70s. We had a Tac Site across from the NAS like that. And I lived a couple of keys up on an old road that weaved all around. We used to race our cars on those roads. Go off a bit and get into the coral and watch it eat up your tires. Go too far off. Forget trees. You're in the mangroves and your car better know how to snorkle
I heard that they turned Boca Chica NAS over to the civilians in Key West. Some club runs AX events on what used to be the old runway and hangar areas. I've brought it up on Google Earth and some sections are all skid marked up like cars race around it. There was nothing like racing down the back road from my trailer down the back side of the air strip and watching F14s dropping in like flies.
