NASCAR driver in Corvette eludes California cops
Ex-NASCAR racer jailed after high-speed chase
Neal, 56, tries to elude cops for 50 miles, driving over 130 mph
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. - The driver of a Corvette who is accused of leading deputies in California on a high-speed chase for nearly 50 miles is a former NASCAR racer.
James Neal was arrested in San Diego County early Monday, and the 56-year-old San Clemente resident was booked into Orange County Jail, where bail is set at $25,000.
Sheriff's Lt. Mike Jansen says San Clemente deputies tried to pull over the 2003 Corvette for a traffic violation at about 3 a.m. but Neal refused to stop and raced along Interstate 5 to San Diego County at speeds up to 130 mph.

Going for the border?
I have driven that stretch MANY times, google it and you will see it's pretty flat out (at that time of night) most of the way, goes thru Camp Pendleton very few access roads for say 20 mi.
If all he hit was 130 I can see why he's no longer in NASCAR.

The Corvette's engine blew up in the La Jolla area and deputies arrested him without a struggle.
NASCAR officials say Neal was a NASCAR track racer at the old Ascot Park track in Gardena in the early 1980s. He never won a national race.

Well, at least he finally won one. He won the inaugural CHP I-5 Race to San Diego sponsored by the California Detetion System. He won't beleive the contingencies they have for him at the club house. I wonder how long they will have him sitting in impound before the steward sends him off to his 13/13?

They actually rebuilt it at a new site literally right off the 99 (west side of freeway). However it's still not paved, the bleachers aren't finished, and the parking lot is..well; foot deep holes everywhere and dirt. I think someone ran out of money and gave up near the end of finishing.

The CHP on the news last night said they were stopping him for a "no front plate" infraction...how to turn a $23 fine into a $25,000 bail and jail time in just 50 miles

Pretty stupid, but looking at it from another perspective, why is it worth it for cops to risk people's lives chasing a car because it doesn't have a front plate?

IIRC, LEO are not supposed to chase/pursue a vehicle that is going over 100 or 120, something like that. Maybe there are conditions on it (empty roads) or something though?

How do you blow-up a C5 engine on the freeway? We buzz our motors season after season racing them and they never blow-up, even with the rev limiter up over 7,000 RPM.
