Default Ball Joint and Tie Rod heat Shield

Anyone use this kit form Quantum for the Ball Joint and Tie Rod heat Shield

http://store.quantummotorsports.com/...products_id=85

Thoughts? Better results than a header wrap and wire?

Pfadt includes a skirt that does not fit tightly. I had to use weather strip adhesive and safety wire. It seems to be holding so-so.

I put them on my z06 with the ducts and they fit nice, but I just put them on so I can't comment on how they work over the long run.

If you have spindle ducts take some thin aluminum like a for sale sign and cut it to shield the ball joints. I used two pieces and pop riveted them to the spindle duct. One pieces on each side sandwiching the spindle duct aluminum. No clue why someone doesn't make a spindle duct extend to cover the ball joints I have ask someone to do it for years. I also wrap and safety wire heat shield on mine.

If the other computer was working I'd post a picture it like I did previously five or more years ago.

you want to use reflective wrap, not just any header wrap

I took some old soup cans and made shields from them. One can makes two tie rod shields. I wrapped some Thermotec Exhaust around the tie rods behind the shields. The Thermotec seemed to work just fine on the ball joints of my C5s with no additional help from shields so I didn't bother shielding the ball joints.

Default heat shielding ball jts. and tie rod ends

I think I've been learning from many of you on this thread.

What I did to protect the upper and lower ball jts. and tie rod end was to wrap the dust cups with Thermo-Shield Ultra that I got at SpeedTek. It is about 1 1/8" width and has an adhesive on the non-reflective side, but I also backed it up with cable ties as shown in this photo. What's interesting is that the cable ties have not overheated after 3 track days.

When your rotors get hot the ties will be gone. SS safety wire. I'll take a picture tomorrow of mine.

I'm sure you're right, but I thought the cable ties would have gone by now (after 3 track days). Since the Thermo-Shield has an adhesive on the non-reflective side, I think I'll leave the cable ties until they disappear. Maybe I can charge a research fee to the cable tie people.

BTW, the DBA 4000 rotors have faded the green stripe to white (856 deg. F) and have started to fade the orange stripe towards yellow (1,022 deg. F). I think maybe the air ducts and hoses are helping dissipate the heat.

i use a cable tie when I first put it on to hold the wrapping until I get the safety wire on. They will survive on my car around the rod not right next to the rotor. I extend the wrap down the tie rod like a finger bandage and tie wrap. Don't depend on the adhesive if it gets hot.

thanks everyone who helped me on this topic!

Im going to try the header wrap and safety wire first and see how it goes. If its still failing then I will spend the big bucks!

The problem with the foil is it tends to come apart quickly. The soup can is bolted onto the tie rod end using the stud nut. Then it stays in place. I am still using the cans I installed 3 years ago on my 03Z. They do get rusty but that only bothers the waxers.

Can you post a picture of your set up?
Can you make a can and show us a raw one?
