Default c4 abs tech - a way to trim the hub budget?

Noticing the '88's hubs are much cheaper than the 91's, I am curious if there's any ABS expertise here.

The 88's ABS sensor is in the control arm, only the stator ring is on the hub.

The 91's ring and sensor are integrated into the hub ($$).

Since the 91 is in BSP I could backdate to the earlier control arms and hubs, and presumably adapt a pigtail to plug them in. If they're compatible, that is.

Anyone try this before, or am I the only one cheap enough to think of it? I don't really want to toast an ABS controller finding out...

Thanks,
- Jeff

Yes, they're interchangeable. You may have to build a different pig tail, but the signal to the computer is the same.

You only need the following to make it work.

88-90 upright
86-90 front sensor
86-90 front hub

I've never done what you're talking about (mainly because I already have an 89) but I upgraded the rear end of an 86 to 88 up and the ABS worked fine. On the rear, the stator ring lines up differently and the rear sensors are angled differently, but like I said, the signals are all the same.

Seems like the best choice would be to remove it.

You can also use Firebird hubs

The only difference is ones's taped, one's not.

You just wind up putting the bolts in backwards.

Update/backdate only applies to cars in the same class, and on the same line. F-body hubs would not be legal on a C4 in BSP.

Speaking of that, is there a very good reason why the stock bolts have to be installed through that hole in the bearing flange? It's much easier to install them from the back.

not that I could see.

Just be careful with the sheetmetal piece that holds the ABS line.

Wheel bearings are free in stock class. F-body and C4 hubs are identicle with the exception of the threaded holes in the mounting flange. You would not loose a protest for the direction the bolts were installed. Therefore, they would also be legal in SP.

With that said, F-body the older style C4 units may cost a bit less for each unit, but they will not slow down the replacement frequency.

Thanks for the comments, all. If I can find the uprights and sensors reasonably I may give this a try. A lot easier to consume $100 hubs than $200 hubs. That, and with an 88 and 91 currently in the stable it'd be nice to stock only one style replacement.

I do worry that I'm in a gray area with adapting the pigtail though. Not that I'll ever get to a Nat event, or once there run well enough to draw a protest. To my eye (or rather wallet), it's a comfort/convenience thing.

Best,
- Jeff
