Default Ball joint removal How to?

Do any of you all know of a How To, to remove the ball joints on a c5/c6?

I'm going to need that after this weekend

Thanks!

You have two options.

1 A ball joint press and vice.

2 Hydraulic Press.

The easiest way is the hydraulic press. You can buy some aftermarket ones from Rockauto. Moog and Spicers.

I've done it a few times now.

My question was more how to go about doing it... I've never done it before. I know a press is a good thing, so I supposed I'll be tearing apart the suspension again, lol! But I picture of how you place the arm in the press to press it out would be great. I mean do you just press the joint out from the bottom of the arm?

I bought a 20 shop press from Harbor Freight to remove and install the ball joints on my C5Z. AS how to position them that takes some metal shims. You use the shims to hold the control arm in the position that you want, so it does not rock and is in line with the ram. I also use a large deep well socket to push the ball joint our with. It is one of those things you just have to play with some.

So do you press on the top of the ball joint (where the threaded area is?) or the bottom (ie turn the arm upside down and press on the "cup" on the bottom of the arm)?

Again, I'm just trying to get a mental picture of how its done.

When I press the old ball joint out I take a deep well socket that is large enough to go over the arm/spindle part of the ball. It just gives you a more stable surface to push on. I only did the lower joints.

If you have not changed your control arm bushing now is a good time to do that also.

Well you need a press, and you will need to heat the control arm. You want to heat the aluminum to expand it a little before you try and press the ball joint out, same thing with installing it.
