Default NASA ST1 Participation Numbers?

How has the participation been in NASA's ST1 class?

I am looking at my options for next year, as my current car fits nicely in both SCCA's STO and NASA's ST1 classes.

TIA

I know that ST1 has been light in the Midwest region, the Sweer brothers are running there Vipers and then you will have an occasional stragler (John Boos was really fast at BIR). Not sure how it's looked at the Great Lakes events.
There are only 6 cars signed up for Nationals in Utah, (I don't see Pfadt or Popp on the list though) so it seems light this year. (Compaired to the 18 cars already registered for ST2)

With the Sweer's coming on board and Danny and I, looks like a base of 4 in the great lakes with a few others coming in now and then. We are working on another Vette for next year so should be a regular 5 then. By the way there were 4 in Atlanta the last 2 times.

Not a single ST1 car out here, only a couple of ST2, and a few more SU cars. Makes me wonder why I'm building a car that'll likely be ST1 or a weak SU...

ST2 probably 1:29?

those 4 secs probably cost how much more over ST2? lol

(but would be fun)

Don't know, a 550 HP engine vs 350 HP engine, everything else is the same

I'm in the same boat. 440-455rwhp Makes me a weak ST1 car with no one to race. I suppose I should ad weight & restrict engine to ST2 as big engine not in the budget

Every one loves the big 450- 500 rwhp cars, but no one really to race.

Unless you step up to SU. then your against the 700 hp stock cars

I looked at doing at NASA time trial at NJMP and my C6Z falls into ST1. There was no other ST1 competitor there the whole weekend. After I read about all the costs (compared to EMRA, CART and others), I decided not to do it.

The good news, is that my lap time still stands

It's been an ongoing thing, a rules change was suggested to drop the HP:lb from 5.5 :1 to 6.5 or 6.0 to make it a little more achievable but there was resistance and the ST1 class has not grown, IMO because of it. Same for ST2 I'd love to see it closer to 8.0 so T1 guys can just come straight over and play & we can run stock LS6/LS3s. At this point you need to either keep the car heavy or detune. ST2 is a great class and you are seeing the numbers increase.

What I see happening with the class is a few guys are going to have cars that are so much faster than the rest of the pack some people will take there toys and go play else where.

PTA seens like the best class for a C5 but there are no car counts there.

I haven't been helping ST1 participation numbers much this year......but I will soon...

ST1 numbers are growing, but not at the rate of ST2. Given the expense difference of the two classes it makes sense.....right,wrong or indifferent.

ST1 turn out will be lower than ST2 no matter what even at a lower pwr/wt ratio, because it is still going to be more expensive..

Hmmm...I wonder who you mean?

Carlyle and I tried to get PTA rolling and thought some C5Z's would cage up and come racing, but it didn't happen. So now we're back to trying to run C4's in ST2.

My last ST2 race at Mid-Ohio had basically two run groups within ST2, the well prepared C5’s and those of us in C4’s. And Ken is correct; they were so much faster, and for valid reasons. I go there knowing the best I can possibly do is finish 3rd, assuming James (Jaymz) and Ken are the only two C5’s prepared at their level. I have a similar situation here in NASA Mid-Atlantic. But I’m not going anywhere, because ST2 gives us a great deal of flexibility to develop our cars as we choose. Some just choose to commit more than others. There will always be participants who make the decision to commit more than others, and that doesn’t even address the difference in driving skills.

Jon and Matt, welcome back to ST2! With you two, Rudy and Rich, there is fun to be had!

Ed
