I have a 97 C5 that is going to its first autocross this weekend. I have been told to fill the oil 1 qt over full, torqe the lugnuts to 90lb, and run the tires at about 35psi. Any other helpful hints for a C5?

Walk the course before you run it (as many times as you can & with an instructor if you can).

Take a few instructor runs & even let him/her drive your car.

Have fun.

There are 2 AX's in the Metromess this weekend, which one are you going to? I'll be at both and will be glad help a new Autocrosser.

You don't really need to overfill the oil for an autocross, you just don't have high lateral g's long enough to unport the pickup tube.

Other than that, read through the sticky at the top of this forum. Where are you running this weekend?

Oh, and one more thing. Hydrate, starting NOW. Even drinking plenty of fluids I lose over a pound of weight on a normal autocross day.

Have fun, and let us know what happens!

I will have to disagree. I don't think a full quart is necessary but you deffinately want to overfill by a 1/4. My experience is with the C4 L98 not the C5. But on the C4 the # 5 bearing has been starved. It's cheap insurance.

As for tire pressure that is going to depend on tires, and temp. I was told the same thing when I started. I run my Kuhmo V710's at 28lbs front and 24lbs rear. They hook up perfect there, but the are a stiff sidewall tire. My Kuhmo SPT's hooked up best at 32lb front, 28lb rear on a warm to hot day and 32lbs front, 30lbs rear on a cold day. This is less than the 4lb spread front to rear I like to keep. I havent run my XSs on track yet but they feel like they want 32lbs front 28lbs rear. #1 thing you can take to the event is quality air pressure gauge with the ability to dump air. The pressures will go up as you run. A 12v tire inflator is your next best friend. Tire pressure is hugh.

Overfilling won't really hurt anything, but I've seen folks panic and flee an event because the oil was only full.

Now, doing a DE, I run a quart over and *still* keep a close eye on my oil pressure.

Enjoy the event, and let us know how it goes!

Definitely fill 1/2 qt over. My Corvette Club AutoX'rs all agree on this.
I would start at 32 psi and see how it tracks.
The pressure will increase as you make runs, even more on a hot day. Check it.

Leave the nannies off. Don't be afraid to spin. Don't even look at the time sheet, just work on getting smoother. By the end of the day, you will wonder how you've survived this long without being able to drive worth a damn. And you'll come back again to get better, and next thing you know, you're hooked.

$25. As I understand it, you just show up around 7:45 for registration and tech inspection. It is at Pennington Airfield in Burleson. Equip Rapide is the group. I dont have the website handy, but it is easy to find.

I think I might have seen your car out there, but I didnt get a chance to say hi. We were in the silver coupe and pewter FRC. This was a ton of fun, anyone considering doing this should get on it immediatley. I already cant wait for my next one.

Come join us at the BMW autocross at the Texas Motor Speedway bus lot (south side of the track) on Aug. 7th. A bit bigger than Pennington, 8 runs for the day, and always a fun setup!

Here's a video of an event there last fall:
