Default Is this what glazed pads look like?

I put on new rotors and that's it. The pads are Hawk HPS. I had very little brakes at an autocross I was at. I did not bed in the rotors. The brake pads had about 24 laps on them prior to changing the rotors. Can you just sand of the glaze if that's what it is?

thanks,

Steve A.

HPS are not track pads, and you likely just got them too hot. HP+ are barely track worthy in most cars (heavy corvettes anyway).

Default Street

Use them in normal street driving and they will be fine, no sanding necessary. But I agree with David, take them off before you take them to track.

HPS is good for a light slow run to 7-11

few hard stops on cold pads/rotors will probably return them close to normal, but these pads are street pads and should only be used as such

Yes, you can try to rub them on some rough cement carfully to try to bring them back. The top layer needs to come off.

The "no braking" is becasue the pad's wern't bedded correctly. Happened to me in my dad's ZR-1. Once we did get a good transfer layer on the rotors it worked fine. Just drive them on the street for a wile while cold and the glaze will come off. Or do as the carbotech guy said. Then bed in the brakes properly and the pads will work. I use HPS on my Camaro as a daily driver and autocross it every once in a while. They work good even on that heavy car. The next step up would be to go to HP+ for autocrssing.

Yes, glazed, I would not use hps even for street.

If the rotors are CLEAN (no deposits) then I would not "just street drive" on them to clean the pads.

You can remove the glaze with garnet sandpaper or rough cement brick.

Don't use any unidentified sandpaper and especially don't use aluminum oxide sandpaper.

Thanks for the feedback. I put on some Hawk HT-10's on the front. The rear has Raybestos ST-41. Probably a miss match of pads, but I had these lying around. The car stops now, but I would like to have more pedal pressure. That was the good thing about HPS pads. Took some pressure to get them to work.

Steve
