Default What groups do you run with in the Great Lakes area?

I am looking for some more groups to enjoy track days, HPDE's with for next season. I have recently gotten into the road racing and am hooked! Would love to get a TON of seat time next season and see a bunch of new tracks. I am from Michigan, so if you run with groups somewhat close, post up who, where you guys run, and how the group is!

Checked them out from the brochure I got, looks AWESOME! Probably a little more strict than what I'm used to but look like great offering and I bet they have great turnouts! A lot of you guys go to those? If so see you on the track next year! I'd love to do Mid-Ohio, Road America, and maybe even Watkins Glen and/or VIR!

I run "high speed autocross" with Midwestern Council:
http://www.mcscc.org/

We run at Autobahn Country Club (Joliet IL), Blackhawk farms (North central IL), Milwaukee Mile, and Road America (though only wheel to wheel there). Events have also been held at Gratten (sp?) and Gingerman.

They do high speed autocross which is like TT, only it is a single full course lap from a stop. They do HPDEs also.

I'll attend any Road America event that NASA has. They had one last year that I went to but not this year. Spring/fall MFBA is good, Northwoods Shelby Club for mid-summer. There are many clubs to go with. Check out the track event sticky at the top of this section, then search by track for event dates.

Quite a few people do indeed run the NASA events. As you are probably aware, they combine HPDE, time trials, and wheel-to-wheel racing into a single weekend. As a result, there is always something interesting to watch out on track. And so there are also a variety of car types. They are at Mid Ohio this weekend so many who would likey respond to this thread are probably there. They are running at Gingerman Raceway next weekend.

A couple more groups that I have run with are:

Spectator Racing: (http://www.spectator-racing.com/) Run buy a few of the guys here on the forum. Great guys. The Spectator Racing guys should be at Mid Ohio this weekend.

Experience Performance: (http://www.experienceperformance.net/content.aspx) Small group of people with lots of track time. Sometimes their events get canceled because they don't get enough people. That means LOTS of track time if they do run.

Alfa Romeo Owners of Detroit: (http://www.arocdetroit.org/) They put on a couple of events a year at Grattan and generally one at Waterford. I've run with them for the past three or four years. Nicely run with a good balance between having fun but being safe. Usually they have one event at Grattan around the beginning of the season and another in early October. Their event in early October is running Grattan backwards on Saturday and time trials on Sunday (with the Chicago group if I remember correctly). I have not run Grattan backwards.

You didn't mention it but if you are into autocrossing, check out the Detroit Council of Sports Car Clubs, (http://dcscc.blogspot.com/). It is a collection of clubs, including the Corvette Club of Michigan. The host club for a particular event is in charge of running the autocross. They even have a championship where points are awarded depending on where you place in your class. A banquet is held at the end of the year, often at a karting place. Of course, there is also the SCCA for other autocross events.

Strict can mean safety

Check this out, all the tracks with tips on driving each course, schedules, etc.. Where you are you might be closer to some in Canada then Illinios?

http://www.trackpedia.com/wiki/Main_Page

I did a driving school at Gingerman last year and thought it was great. More formal but when it is more formal you learn more. I also used a lot of instructor time in my car and riding with instructors my first events.

There's a list of Midwest track event's stickied to the top of the page. If you have any questions about any of the groups, just look it over and ask.

I'll put together a list again next year.

NASA is a great place to work your way up the ladder and get a license.

Lots of chances to get out on track.

Enjoy.

Mosport is about a 4 hour drive for you ... but worth it!

Apex day this Wednesday. http://www.apexdriving.ca/about.html

Dexter day on Friday. http://www.dexterautosport.com/

Plus ... the Powell Raceshop is only 15 minutes from the track!

Thanks much for the kind words. Our next Spectator Racing event is Sept 25 at Gingerman. However, we were at Mid-Ohio this weekend with NASA and had a blast, I personally went through the beach (oops) but still had a great race and finished 4th of 9. Yes, Brownlow beat me barely...

Jon, we should talk, I know of / or run with most of the groups who run in our area and can help you out. Now that I know I'll be safe in your passenger seat (those are some sweet harnesses!) I'm happy to work with you at the track. There's a NASA Gingerman this coming weekend, by the way...

Sounds awesome Jon! I head back to school in about 10 days so my time will be limited but I would like to get out once more at least this year and then be all lined up to do a ton next year!

Thanks!

Just ran with the chicago alfa club today at autobahn joilet, 15 cars showed for lapping, 6-25min. sessions. This was about my
8th time with them along with the north shore corvette club, both class acts. They will be in mich for two days in oct., going to try to make it.

I would highly recommend Spectator Racing also. They are well organized and a fun group to run with.

P.S. I fixed the link to their new website

Thanks Mike. We take good care of our beginners, yet still give our advanced guys the track time to get in some fast laps.

And where else is a hot chicken dinner with dessert included in your entry fee? None of those frozen burgers and hot dogs that NASA gives us

Look for the Gingerman announcement in a day or so, along with the new website rollout. It's not as pretty, but at least it works all the time!
