TRW unveils added head safety for convertibles

TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. today unveiled its latest Head Protection System for use in convertibles starting in 2013.
The protection system is integrated into the backrest bolster of a convertible, improving on current systems that incorporate the airbag modules into the headrest. TRW said this crucial change will make it easier to adapt it for use in a variety of convertibles and for less cost.
TRW, headquartered in Livonia, showcased its second-generation technology in Germany. The supplier's first-generation technology is in production for a European automaker, and the second-generation airbag will be ready for vehicles in 2013.
Consumer demand for convertibles is especially strong in Europe, where there have been 18 vehicle launches this year.
The TRW head protection system works with the supplier's torso protection system.
Advantages are that the latest system is compact, with lighter-weight parts for a smaller module, said Dirk Schultz, global engineering director for TRW's Inflatable Restraint Systems.
It is easier to adapt to vehicles of different sizes and can better position airbags to protect passengers in a side-impact collision.
"Safety is an increasingly important factor in the decision making process of the consumer and the industry needs to continuously improve the protection of occupants of such vehicles, with affordable solutions," Schultz said in a statement.
