Default A question about Toyo R888 and World Challenge

I am racing my car at the World Challenge race at Miller Motorsports next weekend.

So my question:
The series sponsor is Toyo and the spec tire the R888. RA1s get faster with use I am told. What is the deal with R888s? Do they get faster with heat cycles like RA1s or slower. I have two practices on Saturday and then they mark the tires for qualifying and the race so I need to figure out my tire strategy.

I only have budget for one set. Do I save them as much as possible in practice or heat cycle them a bunch like RA1s?

Thanks for your advice.

The R888's came in after we left to go to ALMS so I am not sure. What the other guys told me is that they were roughly 1 second slower with the R888's than the RA1's.

Never saw either one of them get better with age though.

RA1s only seemed to get faster if you didn't start with them shaved from what I remember. I ran them from new, unshaved years ago autocrossing an RX7 and the first event was always a nightmare.

The R888s like a completely different set up and tire pressure than the RA1s. I tried the R888s down at 28/26 cold and eventually I'm at 36/34 cold and aiming at hot pressures in the low 40# range. If they get up to about 45# they see to get greasy.

Give Ron @ AIM Tire (at Infineon) a call and see if he'll share some secrets. He's the one that had me keep bumping up my pressures and they got better and better as I did.

I can't speak to tire age as I drive to/from events on them, and rarely hit the track with the same set up and most of my events are single day with lots of sessions.

Maybe you can negotiate a used set from one of the regular competitiors. A lot of those guys will run new sets just for qual and the race and often have old legal tires you could maybe use in the practice sessions. That's what I did during the one WC race I ran back in 2000. That was with BFG's which only lasted 1 heat cycle then crapped out. We tried to do a one lap qualifying flyer then save the tires for the race.

I don't know the answer but this is a free bump and good luck out there. BTW the last race I saw a bunch of Mustangs from some class that is no longer they needed a place to race and I guess WC invited them so game on.

Oli,

The 888's are not bad tires for the C5. They like more pressure.

Approx. 36lbs cold worked the best for me. I have some test data on most of the courses at Miller with the R888's. I am trying to get out there on Sat and Sun depending on what happens at work later this week. I will hook up with you and give you the info i have.

If I don't make it out get in touch with George Smith (yellow C5 #73), he has my cell number. George will be out there on Fri. if you need info then, to test, just call me and I will look up info depending on which course you are running.

Thanks you all for the help.

We are running the outer course this weekend for World Challenge, although when we are not running it will be split in two courses for the Viper guys and another group.

I will probably arrive Saturday around lunch time, maybe Friday evening if I can work it out.

Oli,

I have a friend who races a Spec Miata and what he has done is shaved them to 2/32” and put one easy heat cycle on them before qualifying and then the race.

Your car is maybe 700 lbs heavier so not sure how to translate that to your car.

Good luck

RA1s fastest lap is the first or second & go slower from there after, so don't use the faster with age logic. I made the mistake of practicing & set up on used tires new were 2.5 seconds a lap faster. I never ran the 888. T1 car in a World Challenge GT race? That is going to be tough. My car was 6.27lbs/hp & I got ran over down the straights 4 years ago.

I am actually racing the GTS class. They have three classes in one race now:
GT
GTS
Touring

I used the 888's on my C6Z when I had it Oli and they do work better at higher temps, about 41-42 hot. Also, on a very hot 100* day at Willow when everyone was going slower, my times were getting faster with the 888's. Go figure

Good luck
