Default First track tires - which ones and from who?

Tired of cleaning up street wheels after track days so I got stock Z06 wheels for track days. I have 4 17s and 4 18s so I can go either way. Realistically only have 3 track days left this year so that is all I need for now. Which ones are a good start and from where? Also, do you balance them or just mount them? Anything else I need to know?

Get scrubs from GT Race Tires (414) 350-6303 (Todd) or (414) 640-7218 (Greg). They have R888's and Hooier race scrubs for I think $100 per tire. They have lot's of 18 inch options to choose from. Do a search and you will find their post.

I'm looking for 18" scrubs too... what sizes are you guys running on a square 18" setup?

I'm a big fan of Nitto NT555 RIIs in 275/40-17 and 305/35-18. Treadwear rating of 100. Discount Tire Direct for $898. I had a local shop mount and balance for $80.

888's in 305/35 worked well for me. I may try and fit 315/30's on if I can find scrubs next season.

305/30s on all four corners?? I would have to get 11" wide wheels wouldn't I or would 10.5" work?

305/35 fit fine on 10.5" stock rear wheels. I believe 315/30 would as well I just haven't tried it. Check the specs for the particular tire you are going to use.

I run the 18x10.5" Z06 rims on all 4 corners. On my car (99) the biggest rubber I can get on the front is in the 275 area or I will start to rub the DRM brake ducts when turning (like in the paddock). So...I usually run 275 all around just to allow for rotation.

If cost is a concern, keep an eye out for scrubs. Frequently on this forum, or on Ebay, or there are several dealers who sell scrubs (as mentioned above).

In spite of trying to get 4 tires all the same, the reality is, I get whats available and often times this leads to different tires or sizes front and rear. But I wouldn't say that has caused me issues, it just takes a little adaptation in my driving from time to time.

Regarding balancing: there are those who do and those who don't and both seem to make out ok. Interesting tidbit: I just put 4 new tires on last week, including balancing and then did a track day on Saturday. Before going out I marked all 4 rims/tires with a paint pen to show where the tire matched the rim. Then I did the first session. When I looked at the marks....the front tires had rotated on the rims. One of them about 10 inches and the other about 3. The rears did not rotate. I did three more sessions and they didn't rotate anymore, which was kind of interesting. Based on this I say why bother balancing them. Maybe balance the rims only next time.

Johnny,

My recommendation is a set of Nitto NT01s. 275 fronts and 315 rears. That is what I run as my practice/lapping set. It is a pretty good sticky tire with a good life.

I second this. NT-01 is a great tire to get started on.

Actually not wanting to buy a new set until the spring. Would like to get some cheap scrubs. I just put $1200 BFG KDs so I have back up. I don't have front brake ducts so it seems like the squared 315/305/295s. Calling GT tires today to see what they got. Thanks.

Will be getting new tires for next season and was thinking of running 275's square. I run hard and wear them down fast so this size seems to be more economical. Think there will be much difference from my 295's as far as grip?

I would be curious if it is a noticeable difference for anyone who wants to chime in. 275s vs 295s vs 315s and 17s vs 18s.

So then a square 275/18 would be just fine huh? I have the DRM/Quantum ducts to worry about up front...

Do any of you run a higher sidewall in the rear?
