Default Helmet and HANS device

Does anyone know of a shop in the metro Baltimore-DC area that sells racing helmets? I need a new SA 2010 helmet and would like to try on a helmet before buying otherwise I would buy online. The closest I know of is DI at NJMP. Thanks.

There's a small shop at the corner of Bel Air Rd & Silver Spring rd in White Marsh that sells helmets. No Hans. More of a drag racers parts store but I bought my helmet there.

Art, can you not use your current helmet as far as date is concerned? Most track outfits are honoring a 10 yr. period aren't they?

Most sanctioning bodies will allow an SA2000 helmet as long as the helmet is in good shape; no cracks in the shell, no crumbling of the interior foam and the chinstrap is not frayed.

If you are getting a HANS device, make sure the helmet has the required posts installed. Some helmets will already have them, some may require installation by the manufacturer.

If you go to internet sites that sell a variety of helmet brands, they will have sizing charts for helmets. Most charts will have tables for hat sizes or a measured circumference around your head in inches or millimeters. These sizes will equate to a helmet size like small, medium, large, and such.

Thanks for the comments, I will check out the places mentioned. My helmet is in good (not perfect) shape every since I hit the wall at Road America. I am signed up for the NCM event and Roc wants SA 2010 helmets and I am OK with getting new helmet. But if Roc gets too ornery I may reconsider donating to NCM next year! I know my helmet size but size alone doesn't determine the chin and cheek fit with glasses. The Bell M4 is a good fit with glasses. There are several models pre-drilled for HANS and of course there are different configurations for the HANS to be considered.

Jeff, my alleged track buddies make sure my head size doesn't grow by posting all my foibles and failures on the Internet. It seems finishing a project with unexplained parts left over is not normal. And they did not give me credit for finding a new way to jack up a lowered Corvette.

Since you know what you want call OG Racing or Discovery parts and that will save you a trip! Both of them will ship, and provide NASA members discounts.

OG is probably a couple hours with Beltway traffic and all

+1 for OG - I spent like 2 hours walking around their showroom with various helmets on before settling for the Arai GP5. Ask for Brian Hair - although any of those folks are great to work with.

BTW, are you saying NCM won't honor an SA2005 helmet?

I think NCM won't accept 2000 helmets? JD

I may have misspoke - quotes from the NCM VIR Information form:

"Helmets with a minimum Snell SA 2005 are required.

After the 2010 season M rated helmets will no longer be accepted."

Thanks for the advice yesterday.

Mike,
It wasn't the crash that damaged the helmet; it was crawling out of the totaled car, uttering profanities, removing the helmet and kicking it into the cement wall that damaged it.

Went down Saturday morn, met Brian, got fitted for helmet and HANS. Great shop, lots of stuff, friendly helpful staff. Like a kid in candy store!

Thanks to all who posted.
