Default At Rd Atl - Ps pump or rack?

During hard turns steering feels like wheel loose or ps is kicking in and out. Any way to check either? Feels OK in straight line. Anything to check before next session?

Check lower control arm bolts are tight. If they have come loose you will need to reset camber.

Also check rack mounts loose or broken.

Had the exact same issue with my '03Z after boiling the ps fluid at Roebling. I would be steady state mid-corner and steering wheel would see-saw back and forth as power assist came in and out.
I replaced the pump, but it did not cure the problem. I'll replace the rack someday, but it doesn't happen on the street.

Last year I had cracked my '08's C6 power steering reservoir and had it replaced under warranty. Soon after that, I did the easiest thing first and changed the fluid out to Red Line and still barfed out fluid.

This season I went from non run-flat street tires and have been using
R80 race slicks. Knowing my power steering issues would get worse I looked into: the Turn One pump, changing underdrive pulley and an off market heat exchanger. I chose installing the radiator for this and fortunately my P.S. reservoir has shown no overflow issues.

This change has worked for me.

I don't think mine was a fluid problem. I checked fluid level before I left and add just a little. Problem was 3rd lap into 2nd session and I didn't push that hard on first session, so I am not sure it was fluid. That being said, I did remove cap between sessions to help fluid cool. Hopefully it was just pump adj to R80s. IIRC from my engine swap, the ps pump doesn't come off easily.

I hate I missed the ride along. We were sitting in the press room(a/c) checking everyones times. We didn't time anyone faster than you. The Ferrari 458 was at 1:34ish, Supr was in the high 1:38s, the Miata yes, the Miata was in the low 1:30s etc. It would probably help me to be in the advanced class to learn some better lines. Hopefully next time.

I never had problems with C5 power steering pumps-my camaro LT1 would only last one event before you needed to replace the pump. Got a turn one, and never had a problem again.

Normally when a pump is going out, you will have power assist and then it goes out. Can make it interesting-losing it completely is not a big deal, but when it comes in and out it is hard to manage.

I would think a rack going out would leak a lot of fluid. Do you have a leak?

Tim

No leaks. At first I thought a wheel was coming loose or a bearing going bad, so I came straight in. No fluid coming out of ps resevoir all day. It started on 3rd lap of 2nd session, so I don't see how it could be fluid boiling. Is there like high temp ps fluid anyway?

I finally installed a Turn 1 pump in my T1 car after losing 2 stock pumps and 2 racks. Just did my first race weekend with the Turn 1 pump and a fairly new stock rack. Saturday, no problems. Sunday warm up and qual, no problems. Sunday race, about halfway through I start losing power steering intermittently making it very difficult to control the car at high speed. I managed to make it through the race, but it wasn't easy. After the race, I checked for leaks and ps fluid level and no problems. I'm running Redline. So, I think the fluid was starting to boil and I need a better ps fluid cooler. Could the rack be going bad even if it has no leaks? I'd like to install a small radiator cooler if possible because of my history of ps problems with this car. However, what is legal in T1?
