Default Flagging st Vintage Races

I was spectating near the start/finish (chief?) flagger & he had a helper with a car number flip board.

Every so often he would shake a stick (flag material held tight) one, two, or three times & his helper would display a car number.

What does that mean?

Say car #8, 3 shakes of the stick?

Number is to be sure the individual car knows that the flag is for him / her. Type of flag is of course the type of infraction / passing/ black/ etc. Number of shakes = how pissed off the course marshals are with the driver.

Thanks, I was not clear enough in my question.

NO FLAG whatsoever was shown, just shake the stick & car number.

I know the flags and what they mean, I know what the car number means, but the stick shake is a new one to me.

Maybe this is some vintage racing thing.

Never mind, found it.

F. BLACK FLAG (Solid Black)

]CLOSED BLACK FLAG (Furled) - Pointed or shaken at an individual car from the Starter's stand (optionally, accompanied by a number board indicating the car number): WARNING for driving in an unsafe and/or improper manner. Continued unsafe and/or improper driving will result in an OPEN BLACK FLAG. Note: The driver should acknowledge this flag but is not required to come to the pits at this time.

OPEN BLACK - Displayed from the Starter's stand with a number board indicating the car number: Proceed directly to the pits and the location designated by the Chief Steward or event chairman for consultation with Officials. DO NOT TAKE ANOTHER LAP. Note: The driver should acknowledge this flag when shown.

NOTE: This flag and number board may also be displayed at station(s) elsewhere on the course (designated black flag station).

I tend to simply ignore it. Then I tell the Chief Steward I never saw it. He/She never believes me.

Yep, just a hand wave is all you need to do.
