Default Race Radios for large tracks

I am interested in getting a set of race radios to allow for car to car and car to crew communications at large tracks, VIR or The Glen for example.

Looking for comments from those with experience using 4W or 5W UHF handhelds in the car vs higher power 25W+ fixed mount radios with external antennas. Fairly big cost difference so I don't want to go with the higher power unit unless it is a must for reliable communications.

Also any specific comments on one brand vs. another would be appreciated.
