Feedback: Nitto NT-01 vs 555R-II if you used both
Greetings,
I'm on my 2nd set of the Nitto 555R-II tire and they am really happy with them as an "drive to the event" tire. Looking back at my times from the last couple of events though, I think they actually work better when they are well worn with little tread, not long before cord. These are not too aged at this point, around 2 years.
So for those of you that have used the NT-01 after coming from the 555R-II, do you notice more grip? Does it help your time? Asking because I thought I'd heard there's not really a difference. The R-II gives better wet performance (I've done that when new and it was passable in the wet) which I wouldn't throw away for no return.
Thanks!
Andy

Hey Andy,
Good seeing you at Summit!
I drove the NTO1s for every event this year except Summit, and personally don't see enough difference in grip or speed to matter and I'm not really sure the NT01s really offered the additional grip I was hoping they would. I think the 555 RII is probably a better street use tire for driving to the track and definitely better in the wet. The NT01s do carry that "competition use only" label which the RIIs don't, not that it matters since I know some people drive their Hoosiers to the track.
Anyway, I'm going to R6s next year but will keep a set of RIIs for rain use. I personally would not buy the NT01s again if I was still going that route.
HTH!

NT01 and active handling
Reviving this to settle one last issue...
...Has anyone run the NT01 275-40-17 and 315-30-18 on track with Comp mode on? That rear size looks a little smaller than the front but it's very close so I wonder if it's safe to use with Comp.
I'd gladly run the RII again except that I'm thinking they will phase out soon so I'll have to switch anyway. Price is the same. I wish grip were even a tiny bit more iwith NT01 but if RII is gone you take what you get.

As mentioned in the other tread, I've used Falken RT-615 tires in that rear size 315-30-18 without any problem, with systems on and off. Only thing that might happen is the electronic systems might react a bit slower but there's no way anyone would notice the difference, it's so small.

I've used both the 555RIIs and the NT01s. We noticed about a 2 sec lap difference, and the NT01s don't seem to have the "roll over" feel like the 555RIIs. The NT01s are more of a dry DOT tire. 555RIIs, while they grip well are more geared for wet/street driving.

555's are even in the same ballpark. They're just a hi per street tire.

I liked the NT-01s better than the 555RIIs but don't know how much faster they were
