Default Gas Jug ?

Looking to get some gas jugs to carry spare gas to the track. My truck has a flat bed cover and would be limited to a 20" tall jug. The VP jugs are just a little too tall. Any suggestions? Sure dont want to deal with the "eco-friendly" junk either.

thx

Um... VP Racing jugs are the industry standard. Don't they make them in various sizes? Stuff like this is why I don't like bed covers on my trucks.

Saw Tuff Jugs at Road Atlanta and Sant left four of them under the tree. Great set up that won't spill on your feet.

I can tell you the cheap gas cans you get now, the plastic is so thin they deform when the gas in them expands and contracts. I'm about ready to throw mine out and get the VP jugs.

all depends if you care about carrying the fuel legally. VP jugs are not.

You could buy some race gas in the metal cans & reuse the cans. Free gas cans.

Years ago I would go to Wicky Bone's race shop in North Carolind and get 6-8 fifty five gallon drums of 112 octane racing gas and tranfer it in my van. A bomb waiting to happen!

I recommend you get some 5 gallon medal safety cans if you are going to transport racing gas.

I laugh when I look at the VP jugs and they say not intended for gasoline

VP quoted
NOTE: The VP Motorsport Container is intended only for use as a rapid refueling device for
racing vehicles used in professional off road and closed course competition racing events. It is
NOT a portable fuel container as described by ASTM, EPA, ARB or other state or federal agencies.
Intended for racing fuel only; not to be used for street legal fuels.

I have four 5 gallon VP racing jugs. I typically don't fill them until the last gas station before whatever track I'm going to. I also fill the car. If there's anything left over from the weekend it goes in the truck.

FWIW, Summit Racing has 5-gallon fuel jugs that they describe as "50-state legal" But they are 25" high, but it looks like that includes the filler nozzle.

They also have this jug in a 4-gallon size and is listed as CARB-compliant.

I have travelled into Canada a number of times to race and I had to have a complete manifest of everything in the trailer and tow vehicle. The never said a word about the 100 gallon ss gas tank until they required all cars to run ethonol. That meant all cars had to have new engines. There was no race!

We took 230 gallons to Mexico city in the early eighties and no one cared!

I hauled gas in everything in those stupid days. I don't think the flame proof containers I use today are legal but they are the best I have.

I would expect that states have different laws concerning the transportation of gasoline in terms of where the cans are carried and how they are secured.. In CA, you cannot transport filled gas containers into CA from another state. But it's perfectly legal to fill the same cans once you are in CA.

The fact that both of the fuel jugs in the links I provided are CARB-compliant, should most likely mean that they are approved for gas storage and transportation in CA, How they are transported when full may be something else again. Federal regulations seem to deal more with emissions and spill control.

Well you do have to transport them from the gas station to where ever you are going to use them. As for how well they would work that is another issue. They have those ##@@!!! emissions complaint non spill filler tubes on them. Since those things were forced on the public I have spilled more fuel filling my string trimmer with one of those cans than I spilled filling gas tanks in all the preceding years of my life.

carb legal has to do with fumes escaping and I think nothing to do with transporting.

click on Type II and scroll down to bottom can.

MODEL 1215
DOT TRANSPORT SAFETY CAN
This Eagle Type II style Safety Can helps reduce the danger of explosion while dispensing flammable liquids through a flexible metal spout. Can has double-walled brass flame arrestors in filler opening and pour spout. Heavy duty roll bars protect both spouts and a thumb screw mechanism assures that the filler opening stays closed while being transported. Meets DOT requirements.

Safety Can Chemical Compatibility Guide

for a mere $$$219 bucks you too can have a cage on your gas can!

and if you truck is not privately owned you have a ton of other regulations to abide by vs. a privately owned vehicle.
