Tire size question
What is the best combo to run on stock zoo wheels for autox and track use. I would like a dot legal tire, but it appears that you have to compromise on the sizes. Any advice would be appreciated.

What kind of track use, track days? And how many track outings per season?
DoT legal or do you want something that is "streetable" that you can drive to/from events. How far is your drive to the track/autocross each way... It all makes a difference.

What year Z00 are we talking about here? C5 or C6?

To the OP, give us more information and we can make an INFORMED recommendation.

Sorry, it is a 2001 z. I may do 5 or ten events a year. Some autox, few trips to the strip, maybe 10k miles per year. Looking for a nice sticky tire. Not concerned about wet weather use. I live very close to most events, within 10 miles or so. Longevity is not an issue. I am running a fairly radical alignment, so even regular street tires do last very long. It would be nice to run a tire by the same manufacturer front and rear.

On the front, 275/40-17 is real popular, although you can go as big as a 295 and they will be OK. On the rear, 305's will work fine. Most don't go any bigger although some 315's will fit.
There are a number of very good dual purpose tires like the Nitto NT05. If you are only going 10 miles you can get a set of wheels and go all the way to Hoosiers and get away with it. In the nittos, use the 275's up front and the 295/35ZR18 in the back. In Hoosiers A6's the 275's and the 295's are common up front, but the bigger tires aren't any faster for autox.
Here is a thread with some of the results that folks are getting with the latest generation of tires. The SCCA street touring classes require a tire with a 140 treadwear rating. There are a number of really good tires that are fitting in that range and if you aren't running for a local championship, then they are a good choice, since they don't harden up like race tires, they last a reasonable amount, and they are almost as good as a DoT race tire.

Personally I be a lot happier if the SCCA moved stock classes back to street tires, and we didn't have to swap tires for street driven cars at each event.

Amen, brutha! $2,800 per season for two sets of A6s to be competitive in SS is more that I want to spend. I am going back to AT for this year running the R-S3s. I really only compete with my son anyway, and this year he is sure to kick my a$$.

My recommendation is an NT05 if you are looking to stay above any certain treadwear rating. 275s front and 305 or 315 rear, whatever Nitto makes to fit the rear tire.
If you are ok with bumping to a R-comp, then get an NT01 in a 275 front and 315 rear.

Can anyone with direct experience confirm that the 315/30/18 rear (25.35") & 275/40/17 Front (25.55") will not cause an issue running with all on or Competitive mode in a C5Z with stock wheels.
Thanks, Ed

I've run 275/40-17 Kumho Ecsta V700 in the front and 305/30-18 Kumho Ecsta V700 in the rear on OEM rims on a C5 Z06 without problems in either comp mode or everything off. This was back in '04/'05.

NT05 not made in 315-18. Biggest size in 18" is 295. Oddly, they have a 315-17.

Running an NT01 in the above sizes will result in a taller front vs rear, I have been told this is an issue with Active Handling.

Yes, I have personal experience in running the tires I recommended above On and off the track. No issues with Active Handling.
If you could get an NT01 in a 305, that would be closer to the 265/295 split of the stock setup. But since Nitto does not offer that size, the 275/315 setup works just fine.

I'm not real sure what class I will end up in, as I have a 402" ls2 with non stock exhaust and shocks. I figure I am already in a class beyond a stock car, so I may as well make it more controllable by using the stickiest tire I can get away with. Is it possible to run a r compound tire or even a Hoosier on the street, knowing that I would have to avoid any rain? I know the longevity will suck, but I don't drive the car daily, and with 600 rwhp, tires are cheap insurance. Thoughts???

Yes, you can drive an NT01 on the street with no issues if you avoid puddled water. I did it for years in a 550rwhp Mustang Cobra. They will last so-so, it depends on how often you put your foot in it.
However, I would not drive a Hoosier R6 and especially not an A6. They have a 40 treadwear and the rubber is so soft you start cringing when you run over gravel and sand. They just simply will not tolerate the hazards of the road like a harder treadwear tire will.

I've been running on Hoosier A6's for a few years now. I drive 150 miles round trip to the events. About 700 miles and 60 autocross laps before I need new ones. I disagree that they can't handle street driving and the hazards that come with it. One time I ran over all kinds of glass from an accident that just happened. After I got home, I had to pick out all the glass that was stuck in the tire. No flat or damage. Just saying.
