Default Where's the heat generated in p/s systems?

What's the prime source of the heat? Is it the pump circulation/bypass activity or the rack orifices during steering? I assume both items are contributing, but I've never seen any definitive explanation of the source. Just trying to get a handle on pump RPM versus lots of steering activity, and the affect on fluid temperatures.

Thanks for any insight.

Mainly in the pump. It spins too fast on the track which builds heat and causes the fluid to foam which then makes the heat build up even worse.

If you need to replace your PS pump take a look at the one Turn One makes. Changing the pump is a PITA.

Anything placed under pressure will result in heat. The higher the pressure, the higher the heat. Add in resistance to flow via the rack trying to push the other way you are turning and you've got heat. I'm sure the pump impeller cavitates at higher RPM which causes foaming in the pump.

And I agree, go with Turn One if you are looking to get a new PS pump.
