Default Differentials, question

I have seen many differentials within GM and Ford. I ran across a type I have never heard of and would like some education on this type.
Its called a mechanical slip differential, currently used in a racing BMW.
Now is this similar to a Detroit locker or a quaife diff??
And what are the advantages for HPDE or Auto cross type Vette?
Thanks in advance.

Good sight. But I guess I understand the friction style LSD, but what is mechanical. I figured it was always clutch style or a mechanical locker.

I have seen "mechanical" used as a description for any limited slip diff that is not electronic. Dunno.

The Turner BMWs use an OS Giken. Like the C5 diff, but allows full lock up and differing behaviors off throttle.
