Default DTC70 Pads Failing !!??

These pads have 4 hours (1 wknd) of moderate braking (never need more than 3rd gear at this track). I have stock C6Z06 calipers and rotors (fronts have DBA one piece) and run NT05 tires. Never have seen this with any pad (stock or HP PLUS) and have used DTC70 for over a year now.

The good guys at KNS are asking Hawk if they will warranty them

Are these safe to run. I have an event in 3 weeks and need to know they need to be replaced.

Anyone see this before ??

I would not run that pad. If it continues to chunk or separates completely, could be a major problem on track. Play it safe, replace them and send back to Hawk and strongly ask for a warranty.

I had Hawk Black pads that looked a little worse then that, but they didn't separate from the backing plate. Are they really separating?

Thats really weird. Definitely call hawk and send them the pictures. I would not be comfortable running those at all. Do yourself a favor and get a cheap set of slotted DBA rotors from KNS and stop using drilled rotors. They are like cheese graters to pads.

The whole pad is not separating but there are areas as in the pictures where it looks like it is flaking apart from the backing plate to the pad surface. You can see some exposed backing plate.

Does anyone have experience with Hawk replacing pads like this ?

These were used on my fronts which are DBA slotted for the track.

I leave the rear stock rotors on when tracking. They last for ever and so do the pads.

Sorry if that wasn't clear .....

I guess you did break them in correctly and let them rest/cure. Did someone else drive them, too, perhaps?

Proper bedding like I always do with new pads. No one else drives my car.

I have in the past seen small corners of the pad missing from the surface. But not large chunks like this from below the surface down to the backing plate.

It is completely normal for race pads to chunk on the edges. I have countless pics of that and the worse they get overheated the worse it happens.

What I don't like here is the below the surface chunking. Not great.

It's either made wrong - or your usage is not appropriate.

Something caused the pad binding material to fail prematurely. Either use or the mix it was made from or the binding to the backing plate.

Can Hawk padlets take R comps and a skilled driver?

Did you note which piston each padlet came from?

I forwarded your original email - and a link to here.

I have to wait for Hawk to respond now.

Thanks for handling this for me with Hawk. That is great customer service

As I said above:
1. I use street tires (NT05) so there isn't unusual heat or stress to the pads
2. Same car, brakes, driver as with my other DTC70 pads

** pads were bad on both left and right as well as inside and outside of rotor**

I have never seen this on any DTC70 or HP Plus pad I have ever used. Hawk pads are all I have used for the last 6 years ........

I'm almost willing to bet that Hawk comes through for you with replacements. I've used the DTC70's 1 piece on my StopTech's since new. They perform great and really last for a track pad.
"KNS Brakes" are also good guys to have in your corner.
