Radiator Replacement


REMOVAL PROCEDURE

Tools Required
J 38185 Spring Hose Clamp Pliers

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Raise the vehicle and support.
Drain the coolant.
Lower the vehicle.

Remove the radiator upper support.

Remove the electrical connectors and harness from the fan shroud.

Remove the fan shroud from the radiator.

Remove the radiator inlet and outlet hoses from the radiator.
Remove the automatic transmission cooler lines from the radiator (if equipped).
IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to disconnect the A/C lines from the condenser.

Remove the condenser from the radiator and position it forward.
Remove the radiator from the vehicle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

Install the radiator.
Install the condenser into the four retaining tabs on the radiator.
Install the automatic transmission cooler lines to the radiator (if equipped).

Install the radiator inlet and outlet hoses to the radiator.

Install the fan shroud into the four retaining tabs on the radiator.

Install the electrical connectors and harness to the fan shrouds.

Install the radiator upper support.
Lower the Vehicle.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten the negative battery cable bolt to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
Program the transmitter.

I also have the FSM.

I thought the sway bar came out but no mention above.

Anyone got a better/alternate procedure?

I take mine out about once a year for a good cleaning. I don't have to mess with fans though. I just lift them up off the tabs on rad and they will sit back out of the way. It is also a good time to repl hoses and clean and oil VR filter while you have it all out. Good luck with it.

I took the air bridge & top rad support off today to scope it out.

I think the condensor will lift off & shift fwd a bit & the fans will lift off & shift back a little & then the rad lifts out all from the top.

The only thing below is to drain the coolant. 4 hoses to the rad & it's free.

Miss anything?

I just did this last Saturday on my C6. I found the use of a dremmel tool w/ flex extension, very helpful. But then again I was installing a DeWitts along w/ an aftermarket fan/shroud.

I've got one handy, but not supposed to need it for my install.

rad out top; fans out bottom, wire harness on the pass side is placed perfectly to be a slight pita

Done, I left the fans in & wiggled it out & back in, had a helper. I think if you try to do it alone you need to take the fans out. It took 2 of us 4.5 hr, then later myself 2 hr to button up. Slow pokes, huh.

I found it to be about 10x easier to remove and install both the radiator and fan from the bottom. You must remove the sway bar first.

More detail? Do fans come out y/n? Top or bottom? A brief writeup would be cool.

Thinking about this a little more, it was the fan assembly that gave me the most problem. While taking it out was difficult, I simply could not get it back in from the top. In desperation, I removed the sway bar, which was easy and fast, and then the fans almost installed themselves from the bottom. I was amazed. I promised myself that if I ever did the job again, I would remove the bar first, then remove the fans from the bottom, and see which seemed easier for r and r for the radiator.

Since we were two we decided to leave the fans in. Only thing I would do different is take the lower hose totally off to make room.
