Default 255/40R17 vs 245/45R17 on 8" rim

I'm going to need new tires before the summer is over. I have 17" x 8" rims on the front and 17 x 9.5" rims on the rear. I am looking under the 'Extreme summer performance' category (140-180 tread wear) and will be using the same tires for autoslalom and getting to/from the track.

I currently have 245/45R17 Kumho XS's on the front and was wondering about going with 255/40R17's. The specs say the min rim width is 8.5", but I know tires are sometimes put on undersized rims. I am looking for opinions on whether or not the wider tires will improve front grip or not. I'm also looking at going with 285/40R17's on the rear instead of the 275's. I'm pretty sure I have clearance for them.

The rest of the car's specs are in my signature. Any thoughts are appreciated.

You could make the 255s work on the fronts. Not sure that they will improve grip alot, but worth a try.

The 285s on the 9.5 rears are easy.
