I have installed a TRW electric pump in my C5 autox car. I haven't raced the car since the install but am planning to do a shakedown this weekend.

The GTM guys have adapted the electric variable speed Toyota MR2 pump to the GTMs. Now the really slick thing is one of the guys made a controller that monitors the C5 wheel sensor to adjust presure based on the speed of the car. Used pump is about $350 when I bought mine.

Don't know if it'll work on the vette rack,,, but it works on the Mustang rack really nicely.

I installed the pump in the trunk for weight distribution. The installation is pretty straightforward - I just ran -6 hoses from the pump up to the rack and used some -6 to metric adapters on the rack. Electrically I'm using a switch on the dash for the enable signal and a 80A self resetting circuit breaker in the pump power supply line.

I got a new pump on ebay for $300

Don't those pumps draw 60 amps or so?

The ZL1 Camaro comes with a completely electric rack, no pump necessay. I want to play with that set up in the future depending on weight etc.

The TRW pump draws ~10A running under no load and nearly 80A at full pressure. Weight distribution is the biggest reason I installed an electric pump. With my install it's also a small power savings over the mechanical pump and cleans up the engine bay a bit.

Hot Rod's latest issue has an article on installing an electric on a old GTO. Different application I know.

Any chance one could switch to an electric pump then find some way to modulate the amount of pressure such that you wouldn't need the power steering cooler?

Freeing up naturally aspirated power is a very good plus!

Oh, you are right! Comes from the alternator! But,

1) its more efficient
2) its more like 60A
3) it frees power were you need it most! @wot
4) i can have a variable pump that spins the pump less when it is not needed!
5) max draw will probably be only when turning at low speeds

So!

If it weren't more efficient inherently, 1) gm wouldnt have used it in the conalts and others and electric water pumps would yield nothing and we would still be using fan clutches!

This has got to be the best solution! Removes the pump and ress all together. Plus any added weight in the rack will at least be nice and low in the car. Also I'm think some custom software / program should allow massive adjustment so you can tune it for what you want.

Seems like it would be easier to just convert to an electric assist instead of having an electric pump running a hydraulic system...
