Default GOING RACING at VIR! in June need some C6 advice

Going racing in June at VIR so I need to start getting these things around. It is not my first track day or auto-x, but it is my first track day in the C6 coming from the GTO. Rubber made a huge difference in how that car felt, and the front pads basically melted the first time out. So I'm assuming those will be similiar problems on the Vette?

Interested in a set of extra wheels and tires, just tires, or just wheels for road racing/autocross, after some research I think I want to stick to 18s in the rear to keep tire costs down, and maximize sidewall for drag strip, maybe a C5Z rear wheel, anyone know if there are clearance issues?

Tires I'm looking at are, Kumho XS, Toyo R888, Nitto NT05, Yoko AD08, Opinions? I have had NT01s and Kumho XS in the past personally.

I could use a new set of brake pads better suited to the track, opinions on Hawks, Stoptech, Carbotech?
-Also, will z06 brakes clear stock wheels?

I upgraded to Z06 springs, are the Z06 sways a good setup for the price, or are the hotchkiss (etc) that much better?

I really appreciate the help.

-Also, in what order would you guys place shocks from best to worst? Considering, Z06, Z51, Bilsteins, Base.

Obviously the base aren't that good, But I have heard the Z06 shocks tend to have snap oversteer on the track? Thoughts and comments?

Of course here comes the oxymoron, I'm trying to do this on a budget. I have to install my dewitts and bosch 044 in the next few weeks, get it tuned. Get the Z06 springs in, and find the rest of these parts and get them installed. All advice is welcomed and thanked.

And if anyone wants to join in the event the details (price) and location of day 3 (autocross) are still being finalized but you can get the info here. http://www.corvair.org/chapters/necc/

last year we had over 150 corvettes there. Plus the Corvette Engineers come down from Mich. Might even see a new C7 or two.

Hotchkiss front sway is about the same as a c6 ZR1. With a front bar at that rate Id either use a C6z06 rear bar or a Z51 rear bar. With the z06 springs you mentioned Id definitely go with the z51 rear bar.
In a rain condition you may want to revert the rear bar to the original pinky width one.

btw I just run the Z06 front spring and base rear. This gives a front to rear balance more like the Z51, GS, Z07, and ZR1. For bars I have the Zr1 front, Z06 rear, and original rear. Im planning on getting the Z51 rear as well. Right now the car is stiffer than stock but works really well at speed in rough areas.

Street tires for stock C6 sizing that you should consider: Kumho XS or Bridgestone RE-11
the others you listed are lower performing.

If you want a street legal r compound that isnt a Hoosier, you can go with Pirelli's Trofeo tires which are harder to find but available through bob woodman tires for about 1500 last time i checked.

If you go with Z06 size rubber (the right wheels will fit it) then get the Goodyear G2s

shocks are really a matter of what the rest of the car has and your driving preference

The Z06 shocks were revised a few years ago to address the valving issues, but yes the bilsteins are better. I run the newer z06 shocks and they work fine although with the spring rates Im running I may try the GS rear (front is the same on Z06 and GS) to match what the factory is doing. If you can afford it then go with koni sports which are adjustable.

The oversteer issues with the z06 had something to do with the rear shocks but also to do with the fact that the spring setup was more oversteer oriented along with the swaybar setup.

Since you are getting into aggressive driving with your c6, you may also want to seriously consider a camber kit to lock your settings in place and be able to get more camber than the factory adjusters allow. RPI sells them the cheapest.

good luck!

No, I'm actually going to be there on the 20th, the South Course, I am going with NECC Corvair Club, my grandfather is a member. Its the 2013 Olympics they do road course 1st day, drag strip 2nd day, and auto x the last day. Lots of fun, I took the GTO 2 years ago.

One note - the R888 is better than the XS or RE11 but you cant get them in factory sizes.
Some use a 265/305 setup for this however the diameters are going to be shorter than stock...

No classes, just a days worth of laps/practice (usually 3 groups to split us up), passing is only allowed on the straight, and 4 timed laps at the end of the day (solo or 1 other car halfway around track)

Here's some more info

I added in the hotchkiss bars to the chart so you could see how they compare to the factory bars

btw the Grand sport is unlisted but uses z51 springs z06 bars z06 front shocks and gs specific rears
ZR1/Z07 suspension (also known as FE5) supposedly uses springs similar to the Z51/GS. I have contacted the manufacturer who told me only gm could give the info out, and then a GM rep who said the dealership parts department would have it, which it did not - so those numbers are up in the air...

Ended up with a set of stock 18/19 wheels, with some new 265/305 R888s. Going with Johnny O'Connell shocks and sways. Z06 springs. Factory Z06 brake cooling ducts, Dewitts Radiator with EOC, stock Z51 oil cooler lines, And I'll be using Pfadts alignment suggestions for track duty with DOT tires and stock bushings. Can't wait its getting closer!

Carbotechs are on their way. Found a set of GS sways and shocks to go with the Z06 springs I bought a few months ago. I think I have purchased everything now. Just thinking now about installing a harness bar, or throwing a harness into the car, borrowing it from my friends passenger seat in his car he doesnt drive currently.
