Paging The NER C4 Autocrossers
Hello All,
I ran an event last fall and met some you, my name is Adam and I had the '90 charcoal gray C4. It looks the exact same as one of your cars, just a year newer. I've noticed that almost all of you were running in the BS street tire category, so I was feeling a bit lonely. It was nice to win BS with an embarassing slow time, helps when you're competing in a class of one. I would like to join you folks in the street tire version of the class and I would like to know what you folks recommend for tires in that category. My car needs new tires anyway, so thought I would ask before I dropped the cash.
Thanks,
Adam.

After reading the description of your vehicles I remember you as well, and that bad fast green C4 of yours. That car looked, sounded and went insane. You've done well with it.

Hi Adam, I remember you, I have the same color car (88), a bit more used up than yours, but I think I talked to you last year.
NER is doing the street tire classing this year as long as your car is stock. You can run any tire over 140 TW
The street tire choices are a little limited in 275's but there are a couple
I have tried Toyo R1Rs , and on heavy cars like ours will over heat fast. I brought a lot of water with me to use on those. I also tried the Dunlop Star Specs in 265s. They were an easy to drive tire, and good in all weather. But this year they are only making 255's so they are out.
Same with the new BFG Rival, only 255's.
So that leaves Kumho XS which is a good dry, warm weather tire. I don't want to jinx us, but we haven't had many rain days in a couple of years now so they would be a good choice tires.
I have no experience with Nitto NT05 but they come in our size and they look like good tires. I believe I read a C5 drivers' review here that was quite good. I almost bought them.
There is also a Falken 615K in our size but, that's another one I have not heard anyone running (In the SCCA events anyway). You might want to search these tire names on the Mustang forums too for reviews.
The couple of us who do have the C4's may run in B stock with Hoosiers this year but I would say running road tire class will give you fair competition against any of the other Rear wheel drive cars.
good luck in your choice - glad you want to come back.

Hi Barbara,
I remember you telling me that you're a member of this forum and was wondering if you were going to chime in. That's interesing that several of you are looking to step up to the Hoosier R compounds. I've read that they are very good, but they are very expensive. I've got the old Kumho Victoracer R compounds, but I think that they are so old that the compound has dried up. They were a lot greasier than I remember R compounds to be, so I think that they may be toast. I don't believe that Hoosier A6's are in my immediate future, so I will be looking at the tires that you recommended. I believe that my best friend has those Nittos on his '03 Z06, and they are an impressive performing tire. I'll have to check on that. I was running with the factory alignment when I met you last fall, so I'm sure that didn't help. I hadn't autocrossed in a long time and when I was competing regularly I was driving a front wheeler, so don't know the car at all in autocross situations. I'm planning to be back, may not be able to run a full schedule, but I'm planning to make the effort. Thanks for the recommendations, and I'll probably see you around.
Best,
Adam.

I also run in NER but in a C5 Z06, I really find that the ST classes are designed for the small cars and that using a street tire handicaps a high HP car way more than the lower hp cars. That being said Barb and Jeff do wonderful things with their C4's on ST, but they are top drivers and really move out when they throw on R comps.
If the cost for R- comps is too high, buy some used scrubs. I got some like new ones from DWW motorsports and they are across the street from devans, also john Berget racing tires sells scrubs cheap, but the shipping can hurt. I can say that my car on street tires is a complete joke, it might as well be raining, too much HP and torque .

BTW You more than welcome to join my club at Devens
We run a smaller group, so you typically get in 10 or 12 runs!

I just ran a thread on street tires for C4's. It should be on the 1st or 2nd page of this Section. I'm going to run the New Dunlap Star Spec II's. The slight reduction in width I feel will be MORE than made up for with better compound. The Hankook RS3 is another inexpensive good tire.
FYI, the new DZII's have a tread width of 10.2 inches on the 255/40/17. That is wider than some 275/40/17's. Dunlap tends to be cut big.

Not necessarily stepping up to, rather returning to A6's.
I'm not a good one to ask - I ran Firestone Firehawks (320tw) all last year. My speed secret is out!
If you have limited experience, I think any of the mentioned tires would work for you. Biggest thing you could do is get that car aligned and seat time. Walk course with experienced drivers, take instructors, ride with others, ask questions!
The S2000s and MR2 (if Bryan returns to RTR) are tough to beat in ST but give you a great benchmark. However, I think all the class regulars got at least one win.
Welcome back!
