Default Why are Cobalt brake pads so expensive?

I am looking for track pads for my new Stoptech ST60/40's. I was using carbotech 10/8 but have been having issues with them overheating and smearing. I am considering the Cobalt XR2s but they are a lot mor expensive than Carbotechs. Are they really worth the premium price? Why?

Thanks for the help,
Charley

I love them and they seem to last a LONG time, i think they are worth the added cost over hawk and others i have used in the past etc.... not as prone to rust on wheels as easy as some of the others.

you should be pleased with them if you do go that route.

Have you considered XP16/12 or 12/10?

I run XP12/XP10 and very happy with them. Half the price of cobalt. I can't imagine the Cobalt will last twice as long or stop you any faster.

Just the fronts. Keep in mind that my car currently has Z-51 brakes.

The other advantages with the cobalt pads is they are compatible with any street pads and they have an extremely wide temperature range.

It was such a pain to change the brakes on my Mustang I used to put them on a home before driving to the track and they'd work fine on the freeway and around town (albeit very noisy). I drove from Detroit to Calabogie Motorsports Park twice, almost 1000 miles per trip, using the cobalt pads and other than being a little more abrasive in the rotors when cold, they were fine.

I use the XR1's front and rear on the Z06 using R-compound tires & cooling ducts.

Yes, I have Quantum Spindle ducts and fog light inlets. Although I just added the Fog light inlets and have only tried them once on a very short track that had a lot of braking and low top speeds

If you want to go with 12&10 I will be happy to set you up give me a call 216-780-8825. I think because your car is heavier this will work better.

I did some research and found the stoptech St60 is same pad shape as some pads i have sitting around that wont get used again.

here is link confirming it

http://www.cobaltfriction.com/Search...s.asp?Cat=2452

Will sell for $250 shipped let me know I paid $459 + shipping for them

Cobalt Friction XR-2 pads CRB.XR2.AP5/20.0mm for AP Racing 6 piston CP-5555 calipers, will fit Stoptech ST-60 calipers as well they have 3/4 of the pad left atleast these were only used 1-2 track days before i switched to different calipers due to one failing and it was unreasonable to buy just 1 caliper.

I know most don't go with a multi use pad, but I typically run hp+ on my car all the time instead of changing for the track. I had good luck with this on my Camaro and planned on doing the same with the GS. I won't be running r comps anytime soon since I don't have an extra set of wheels yet, so I don't see the benefit of running a hard core race pad. Are any of the cobalt pads able to work as double duty pads?

I run Stoptech Street performance pads on my ST-60/ST-40 brakes. I run them on both street and track, BUT only on relatively light braking tracks like MSR Cresson. These pads are good for 1300 degrees F, and both my friend (stock Z06 calipers) and I run these pads. They work fine (cold) on the street, and also very well hot on the track with (scrub) Dunlop slicks. I would run real race pads (Cobalt XR2 or PFC-01) for a hard braking track like Eagles Canyon or Road America.

Best pads on the market today, bar NONE.

We have been using Cobalt pads on the race cars now since 2005, and haven't looked back. You will find them on almost every top World Challenge, GrandAm, and most of the FIA cars now.

Not only do they perform in almost every condition, their life cycle and kindness to the rotors have been very hard to beat.

As to their price...part of it is the fact that they do work so well, but the other part of that is he only does race car pads and does not make 100,000 pieces of each pad a year so it is a bit more limited. Think of them as the Sam Adams of brake pads. Award winning micro brew that caters to the enthusiast more than the mainstream customer.
