Default Racing: Real Life vs Video Games

Those who know me, know that I do Film/Media Production as my day job. This was a fun project I helped produce and shoot. Probably most here are my age or older (which means you've probably never heard of Rooster Teeth, I think everybody 25 and under watches all of their videos, as their youtube channel has a combined 4.7 billion views). They do a lot of video game/gaming related shorts.

Anyway, this is pretty funny. Any shots of the Kia at speed on track where shot with my ST3 Corvette as it was rigged with cameras as the high speed camera car. I think that's actually the first time I've ever gotten paid to be behind the wheel on a race track

Funny video. I did see a reflection of a red car at one point and then a set of C5Z track wheels on pit lane made a cameo appearance.

It definitely has to be disorienting when your body is sensing completely different inputs than your brain when you're on track in one car while concentrating on trying to drive the other on-screen.

I thought I'd sneak that in there for those few of us who would appreciate it

Guess I'm officially old since I've never heard of Rooster Teeth. 4.7 billion views!?

So did they ever really answer the question if the game was faster or slower than the real car? (not riding around shotgun obviously)

Obviously the useful comparison to be made is pro driver/real car/real track vs. pro gamer/video game/sitting stationary.

Video games have RESET buttons

Real life doesn't

I've seen it done before. A professional driver and a gamer squared off. They each did a lap in a popular video game and then a lap in a real car. Added the times together and the lowest cumulative time won. The gamer won by a landslide. I've been looking for the video, but can't find it yet.

Close, but not quite the one I was remembering...

^This!

Okay guys, I don't mean to be rude, but I've got a missing girlfriend, a guy who's pregnant, an idiot who thinks his pet just died, AND our worst enemy is hanging out unsupervised in our base right now. So I really, really, REALLY don't have time for this HORSESHIT RIGHT NOW!

I used Iracing quite a bit on Watkins Glen before I visited the track. After my first session I only got 3 seconds faster after a 5 day DE on track.

My instructor was rather impressed for never being on the track before. I played it off like I never heard of Watkins Glen before. Ha

My wife and I used the latest F1 game to get ready for laps at COTA in Austin. We didn't want to make total fools of ourselves the first time out. It worked well. We got an appreciation of where the numerous blind spots are, and so forth. While sims can't replace the feeling of g-forces or simulate your suspension too well (unless very well tuned) that orientation is priceless for a new track.

I had dinner with the folks at RSR Nurburg a few weeks ago. (that is one of the car rental businesses at the Nurburgring). They told me this story from a few years ago. Two young men had won an international video gamming competetion and were given spots on a team to race at 'The Ring. Neither had ever raced a real car before, so they got some training time in first. One them totaled his car about 1/4 way around on the first lap, got out and said, "that bump isn't there in the game". The second one actually listened to the advice given an went around slowly at first to learn real life racing. He actually ending up doing pretty well.
