Default driver, crew communications

I've been looking into communications and I need the most basic thing available. I only race about 8 weekends a year so not too heavy use. I just would like to be able to tell whoever is helping me or co driver what I need from them.

If its more than about 3-4 hundred I would rather wait. However when I'm looking around I see different types. What is the difference between two way and one way? Does one way mean only driver can speak to crew or crew to driver, or does it mean only one person can talk at a time?

Has anyone ever tried making their own system by disassembling a walkie talkie and mount the speaker near my ear and the mic in the front of my mouth and put the push to talk button on a switch or something?

I'm pretty poor so most of the things I used are making creative solutions....
