Default My new road race project

Well, I had planned to build one of the new Howe TA2 Mustangs and power it with an LS1. But my buddy and car builder Woody at BEMCO Fab has commandeered the body I bought, for a customer. So I guess I will sell that and move on to my next idea.

A tube frame version of the old Owens Corning Corvette's but with a 600 plus HP LS motor and:

* Jerico 4 speed
* nine inch Nascar type Grand National floater rear end
* three link with watts link suspension
* Penske shocks
* brembo Nascar calipers and rotors
* might use CCW 18" wheels...undecided whether to go modern here or stick with Vintage type.
* ATL Cell

It will be a Vert with hardtop like the OC cars.

Have sourced a probable body manufacturer

Should be about 2500 # without driver

A carbureted LS7 would probably give it enough go!

This is one of my dream projects, though I was thinking C5/C6 transaxle and suspension. Good luck with it and please post lots of pictures of the progress.

Doable, but much harder to work on, more expensive, without any gain in performance in my opinion.

Trans Am cars are built with live axle rear ends, can handle 900 HP and are among the fastest fendered cars on the planet.

...but slower than GT3 cars with half the HP...though a change in tires will help the T/A cars, not to mention they are at least a tenth of the price to campaign.

For race car, absolutely. The one in my head is a street car.

I know the guy who works on all of Tony DeLorenzo's race cars and restored a couple of the OC cars if you need any info on the originals.

Gotcha, a street version would be cool, especially with the LS motor.

Woody built a tube frame chassis for a customers 57 Chevy last year and installed a 480 HP LS3 GM crate motor in it. Has coilovers, 9" nascar rear end, rack & pinion, big calipers etc. Now a very light 57.

Thanks for the offer on the OC cars.

There's a guy that runs a C3 with Midwestern Council that has CCW Classics on it. It looks awesome.

Just wonderin' Ben, what GT-3 cars are you speaking of? The ALMS GT3 Porsche Cup pole was 7 seconds slower than Tony Ave's pole time at Sebring. Tony was in the 1.59's

Ave was also 6 seconds faster than the GTC pole and only one second off the ALMS GT pole and also about 1 second off of Corvette Racing.

Rest assured Tony's budget is several million less per year than Corvette Racing's.

TA cars are amazingly fast, especially for dollar spent.

Old School vs New School... TA are all about the HP, GT3 have much more technology but not near the straight line speed. It's like comparing an F18 to a P51 Mustang. For argument's sake, a top GT3 car is about 2 seconds quicker than an ALMS GT car. The only difference between a GT3 spec car and the now extinct ACO/FIA GT1 cars are a difference in weight and the lack of Carbon brakes, also the rear wing has to be 120MM lower.

Back on topic, your project is awesome I can't wait to see the finished product. If you go with 18 inch wheels are you still going to use the NASCAR brake set up or go to a larger diameter rotor?

Don't know if any of this will work for you. Most are better than rough and the wrong year. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for a 68-73.
