Street/track LS6 clutch setup
I need to pull the drivetrain on my 45k mile 04 Z06 and am thinking that I might as well replace the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate/throwout bearing assembly while I'm in there, but the multitude of options on the market is dizzying.
The car sees 95% street use and will likely never see over 450 whp (intake + tune, MAYBE headers or cam at some point). The other 5% use is going to be running NASA time trials and other track day stuff with R-comps running full on 10/10ths so performance matters too.
I'm thinking about doing the LS7 clutch + 13 lb aluminum flywheel kit for $700. It seems like a steal that should gain me a little performance while being easy enough for normal people to drive on the street and quite cheap.
Am I right that this combo will be a major upgrade in feel and shift time without being an issue on the street?
My only similar experience is that I put a similar kit on my old Audi S4 (RS4 upgraded clutch/pressure plate plus aftermarket aluminum flywheel weighing 13 lbs instead of the stock 26 lb unit) and that thing was perfection. The lightweight flywheel completely transformed that car allowing lightning fast shifts compared to stock and still had stock-like engagement for stop-and-go traffic. The kit for the Audi cost $1700 though!

...and after another hour of reading various threads I've changed my tune already as the heavier LS7 clutch is supposedly not that great for high RPM shifting, which is what I do at the track. Eventually I'd like to be shifting around 7000 or so and am currently leaning toward a Monster Stage 2 with their 18 lb flywheel for roughly the same price as the LS7 kit. $800 shipped on sale with a new slave cylinder.

I did an Exedy stage 2 clutch in mine. Rattles at idle and a bit heavy but feels good and I think it shifts good on track. Much more positive engagement.
I bought it because I know the Exedy guy though so take it for that.

I've gotten very good service from several Spec 2+ clutches with fidanza fly installs. Good street / hpde set-up for the money on near stock hp cars.

Echoing what other's have said here...I'd not put the LS7 clutch even with a light flywheel into a C5 unless I was making well over 500 hp/tq. The inertia of the bigger disk is what would worry me. I'd go with a Fidenza aluminum flywheel and a new LS6 PP and disc with a new T/O brg. Would shift great for road racing still be fine on the street.

I have (2) all aluminum SPEC clutches for sale. One is a stage 1 and the other a stage 3.
The stage 1 will be the best for dual purpose use and it's very light.
