Hope it happens, but it's going to be a tough one.

I was talking to a friend who has a fab shop here in Indy.. He just built them a wing in a hurry and they are in the wind tunnel as we speak. So some things are definitely happening.

I was pretty sure the engine deal was coming when the sponsorship deal was announced between Haas and Ferrari.

Now about the chassis....................

That's one of the tough parts - the chassis and body still has to be their own design and construction. This is where they really need to hire some experienced designers and fabricators ($$$)

I visited with Gene a little over a month ago at Indy and chatted about F1 and his plans - he was pleasantly surprised at the number of folks in the US that have an interest in it. He wouldn't reveal too much other than they are moving forward with it. I asked him if he needed a fat, older, clydesdale driver...LOL...he has development drivers (met two of them) that would fit the age (15-16) but their background might not be a fit.

Hopefully Ferrari gets their engine program up to speed for next year. The "small" power unit they built for this year is a disaster.

What's ironic is that the merc factory team probably has a smaller power plant package. In addition, I don't think that they have an eighth gear onboard, so their transaxle is probably a little shorter as well.

Section 9.6.1 of the 2014 F1 Technical Regulations states that the number of forward gear ratios must be 8.

Interesting. I've never once seen where Merc's transmission is listed as being in eighth gear. It always tops out in 7th.

Mercedes to correct gear ratio flaw for Singapore

Mercedes' rivals are in for some bad news -- the dominant German team looks set to pull even further ahead in Singapore and beyond.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that the Brackley team will correct its flawed gear ratio selection ahead of the night race in the Asian city-state next weekend.

The rules dictate that the gear ratios chosen by each competitor at the start of 2014 are then frozen for the entire year -- with the exception of one "joker".

Mercedes has now decided to make that "joker" ratio change for the rest of the season, beginning in Singapore.

Auto Motor und Sport reports that it was on the long straights at Monza last weekend that Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg used eighth gear for the very first time.

"It (eighth gear) was too long for all the other circuits," admitted designer Aldo Costa.

Mercedes' miscalculation will now be corrected with a shorter eighth gear for Singapore and the subsequent decisive rounds of the world championship.

Curiously, the German marque's customer, the surprisingly competitive Williams, got its gear ratio calculation right from the very beginning in 2014.

But technical boss Pat Symonds admits: "We were a little nervous at first because we thought they (Mercedes) would know their engine inside out.

"After a few races I was reassured," he added.

Symonds said that even though the eighth gear was introduced this year especially for the new turbo V6 rules, in the end it was unnecessary.

"The engines have so much torque that we could make do with a five speed gearbox," he said. "It would save a lot of weight and space.

"Unfortunately, the regulations prescribe the eighth gear -- otherwise we would have never had it," said Symonds.

Timing is everything

http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/ha...russia-factory

Gene Haas' foray into Formula One continues with the purchase of Marussia's Banbury factory.

According to Racecar Engineering, Gene Haas recently noted he was interested in participating in the Marussia F1 auction, which saw many of the crumbling team's assets sold off to the highest bidders. However, their Banbury factory was not part of the aforementioned auction.

Gene Haas has bought the facility and will use it as his European base with the team's headquarters being developed in North Carolina. With Ferrari power, Haas F1 will join the grid in 2016 with a TBD driver lineup.

The report also added that it is believed Haas also has access to data and designs for Marussia's planned 2015 car.
