Default Air compressor recommendation

Not looking for commercial grade unit, just something with enough power to remove lug nuts. I have an impact wrench, a NitroCat 1200-K 1/2-Inch so good to go there. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I bought a decent size one at Harbor freight for $150 on sale and use it mainly to run my impact. 21 gal 2.5 hp 4.7 cfm@90 HF item 67847.

I've had a 30 gallon craftsman for years that hasn't had an issue. Enough to do everything but continual grinding. If you really want to step it up, kobalt makes some decent 60gallon tanks a few of my buddies have that are oiled pumps.

Why not get a dewalt 1/2 drive 18v cordless impact?
Thats what I use on my sandrail. Alot less hassle than a compressor and hose

Does it loosen your lug nuts?
I have a Ryobi 18v, 200ft lb rated, that does not.

I have the Craftsman cordless that I take to the track and it removes lug nuts just barely, but it usually will not remove the caliper bracket bolts. Not a bad tool for mobile use but the air gun is a lot stronger for home use - plus an air compressor is frequently useful at home anyway.

Electric Cordless: Ingersoll Rand 7150. Works like a champ taking off lug nuts. Super easy but not cheap.

Air: I went with the Craftsman "Professional 27 Gallon Super Quiet Vertical Portable Air Compressor." At the time, it seemed to have the highest SCFM that I could find which used 120 Volts. Just wait for them to go on sale. It is only 150 PSI in the tank though so it does have to run a fair amount if you use it for grinding.

Another vote for cordless impact tool. I have a Hitachi that will break them free but The low cost will work if you just loosen the lugs 1/4 turn before hitting them with the tool.

Check out Northern Tool!! I got this one on sale for $399.00 plus $50.00 off coupon= Total $349.00 with free shipping. Plus they have rebuilt one with full warranty.

One thing I wanted is one that was quiet!! The direct drive ones are really loud!!! JD
Note: you didn't say if you wanted it for the shop or pits?? If you get one for the pits, get one with at least a 6 gallon tank anything smaller will not run a air gun for very long. You can get a reconditioned one at NT for $99.00

Agreed. Same one I've used for years and yes it will remove lug nuts with ease many many times on a single charge. I haven't used my pneumatic air gun in forever. As a matter of fact, my 18V Dewalt is stronger than my Ingersol Rand impact at 110psi. No joke.

On sale for $80...It's 1490 IN lbs, and I just used it to remove all 4 wheels lug nuts and both my front L/R brake caliper mounts.

This thing kicks A$$ for $80.

I have an Ingersol Rand SS5L5 that has a 100% duty cycle and is basically the most powerful you can get on 220V. It is a complete overkill for just an impact gun but I can sandblast and run all air tools continuously with it.

For impact guns, Harbor Freight has electric ones. A wired one for $50 and a cordless one for $120 (rated 330 ft.lbs - http://www.harborfreight.com/12-in-1...nch-60380.html ). I use the cordless one both at the track and in the shop and haven't used my air impact for a long while.

Not really, That's a direct drive Craftsman. If you've ever heard one, they are loud, sounds like someone using an air chisel on sheet metal.

They will drive you out of your garage.

A belt drive compressor is 50% quieter.

This is why my compressor is in the basement with just a line running up to the garage. Saves space in the garage and makes it plenty quiet.

Here's an article I wrote last year for Vintage Motorsport magazine. It covers the basic facts regarding compressors.

One nice thing we can do here in Florida is place the compressor outside of the shop. Then just plumb the lines into your garage or shop. Did I mention that I really hate the noise of a compressor?
