Default Another Drag Radial Question

2008 6m car. Wanting a dedicated drag tire that will have very limited street use (The tires, not the car). Thinking about a Nitto NT05R in 285/40/18 on a widened front gumby. Car will have boltons installed over time and will likely never be over 500 crank hp. May someday run 4.10's. My thinking is the height is right, tire should be wide enough to hook, and good at the top end. Simply want a solid tire that will take me consistently into the 11's and look good doing it Didn't see an MT tire that was the size I wanted.

What do you all think?

Relatively new to the forum. Didn't find the info I wanted on this tire size in a search. Simply point me in the right direction if this subject has been beaten to death.

That would be a pretty good set up for sure. I'm assuming that you're wanting to go with an 18" 'Gumby' polished 5 spoke on the rear in order to match stock 'Gumbys' on the front?
And I would think they'd need to be widened about 1.0" - 1.5" (from 8.5" to 9.5" or 10.0")?
I still prefer 17" rear wheels/drag radials but it's difficult to do if trying to match stock front wheels.
A popular (and very cost effective) combo is any stock C5 17" front rim (either the 17x8.5 C5 LS1 rims or the 'more preferable' 17x9.5 C5 Z06 rims) with 275-40-17 drag radials.
Both will clear stock C6 rear brakes (base, Z51 and F55).
That is generally a better size for drag racing for a few reasons. Thicker sidewalls, slightly shorter overall diameter (effectively better overall rear gearing), more manufacturers make them (M/T, Hoosier, Nitto, Goodyear, Toyo etc.) and they are notably cheaper to replace than most 18s (though those NT05Rs are priced quite competitively) when they wear out (and they do LOL).

If you're still hell bent on 18s, I would even consider making the Gumbys a little wider yet (say, 18x10.5) and going with either the M/T 305-35-18s or even the Hoosier 315-30-18s (quicker wear, slightly less 'streetable') but just make sure that they do the wheel offset correctly or they could rub.

Thank you LS1/LT1 for the feedback. You are right-I am planning on using polished front gumby's widened to 10.5". I understand that the 17" rim would be the most effective, I think having the rims match the gumbys on the front is important to me. I'm using the SpinMonster/Tractionmonster thread as a guide. I chose 10.5" width as I can run the 285's now and maybe go to an MT 305/35/18 at a later date if i felt the need for a wider tire.
By the way, the car is an F55. Thank you again for the feedback. It is appreciated.

'08 F55 bolton car here running 10's and 1.4x 60' times on 275 x 17 Hoosiers on 9.5 x 17 C4 CE wheels.

If you want wider 18" gumby wheels, try GS fronts that are 9.5. You won't need (or want) anything wider unless you go well beyond 550 HP.

Thank you. I hadn't thought of the GS wheel as an option. I'll look up the backspacing…
