Need torque converter advice w/ new info
Hey guys,
Well I had the new 408, YSI, 2.75 pulley, E85, holley hi-ram ID1700's, RPM level 7 4L65e, setup dyno tuned yesterday and engine/blower was working great, only problem was the torque converter....
It was the same precision industries 3600 single disk I had restalled to 4000 several years ago with the old nitrous setup well the 4000 now stalled at 6500 with the new power and didn't want to couple together and created such a small tuning window we didn't get much done but with tons of slip it was 840rwhp, 21# of boost at 6500 so its got mega potential.
My question is, I called precision and they send it back in and they'll restall it and make it work for the new power but I'm worried that won't be enough?
I'm not looking to lock this up at WOT so I don't see a multi disk is needed?
Anyway, I sent FTI, Yank, Coan, and Precision all the new specs to see what they suggest but I actually trust you guys more just because several of you guys have done what I'm trying to do here in Iowa BFE.... Hope you guys will give me good advice like you normally do!
Thanks in advance!

Did RPM suggest a converter?
Have you called TCI?
Sounds like you've got a heck of a beast once you get it all dialed in. Good luck with it.

Capthuff,
Not exactly, they just suggested I talk with Precision Industries, they said to just send in the converter, they would cut it apart and call me back to discuss what needs to be done with new hp combo. This sounds good but I'm worried that the converter itself needs to be better for what I'm trying to do, not just a stall change?
No on TCI, but I've filled out all the new converter build sheets for Yank, Coan, FTI with no response at all....... not exactly what I was expecting......
Yeah I think it'll be a good combo but we'll see! This is my first bigger than stock cube & boosted setup so still learning every important details second!

Racing industry websites are the worst! Contact and current info are often difficult at best to get.
I'd just suggest calling the converter companies and talking with someone there.
I don't know anything about converters and the magic that happens inside, but I do know first hand how the wrong converter can severely affect the performance of a car.
Did you build your car for any specific class racing? If so, what converter company - or companies - sponsor or promote the events and classes? Those would be the first ones I'd call.
When possible, I like to do business with the companies that support the events and classes I participate in.

yeah I agree on the companies, and I'm the same way on the magic spinning donut inside the trans lol
No exact class specs other than I run it in a heads up street legal class and basically only rules are "mufflers, license, registered, insured, no back half suspension, DOT tires" and that's about it. Basically the fast car right now is of course a damn light Fox body with lots of N20, runs 5.60's in the 1/8th and I'm trying my hardest to build something to be competitive again.
Since we are in BFE Iowa no actual sponsors. Basically a EFI car that flies to the track its like fairy dust and unicorns to most the racers around here lol

I would think you shouldn't be too far off 5.60s once you get your car and converter dialed in.
I'd call Precision back and express your concerns again. See what they say.
Good luck with your goals.

thanks that gives me hope!!
Yo-el, ironically Troy @ FTI just called me and long story short they suggested a 10" triple disk w/ a 3000 advertised stall but would actually flash to 4000-4500 off of footbrake -

Some say the triple disc versions won't 60 foot as fast, and they my be right. But I can lock mine up in third gear and pick up 3.5 mph in the 1/8th mile. I've even locked it up in 2nd gear. They sure put more power to the ground that way.
