Next we realized the driveshaft was now too long...had to send it out to be shortened...got it back finally and now the driveshaft loop did not fit and had to be massaged...

Last weekend I made a couple of other decisions which pushed us back a bit more...I decided to change gears before even running the car...the 5:13's are coming out and we will put in less gear...somewhere between 4:56 and 4:30's...need to check on a carrier issue possibly...Dana 60's are all new to me...

Lastly, I decided to pull out the air shift deal and replace it with an electric shift solenoid...I did not want to drag a generator and air compressor to the track with me to refill the tank all the time...

Anyway, we are now shooting for next Friday to test the car...if all goes well, I will leave it at the track and race in the IHRA points event the next day...fingers crossed...the good news is the IHRA has waived getting a physical to get a license for a 9 second car...I would still need to do the on track tests but that is no problem...I am still trying to keep the car above 10 seconds...
Hey Dan rear gear change will get you into the 1/4 mile races again. Your T&T at OSW?

No, I went to check out the track and see if things had changed at all and to hang with Bud...he went out first round on a red eye...very light crowd, maybe 30 racers total in both classes...no one bought back either...they still have serious problems including personnel...

I will let you know if we make it for Friday night testing...I ran into the previous owner of my car at Lakeland...he told me something about Dana 60 gearing which troubled me...I researched it today and turns out he was correct...Dana 60's have a carrier break for gearing...it is 4:56...anything 4:56 and above has a carrier that cannot be used with less gear...

Without changing carriers, 4:56 is the least gear I can run...we are checking to see what the rpm would be in the 1/4 with 4:56's and the 14/32 tire...Wallace needs a mph so that did not work for me as I don't know what my mph will be...

BTW, there is no 4:30 gear for a Dana 60...no such thing...I would have to go down to 4:11...if the 4:56 would work for now, I may be able to fit a 14/33/15 tire under my car which would take a bit more gear out of the 4:56's...always something....sigh...

I would think you could run at least 135mph with the 4.56 and a 32" tire, depending on how high you want to spin that BBC.

did a little bit of math that may help you & Rob decide what to do

because we don't know how efficient your TQ converter will be, I used a pessimistic 8% slippage in the traps:
while speaking with Rob about this topic in the past, he seems to think it would be even-tighter, maybe 6%, for an FTI piece

also, I know that most of your racing will be done in the 1/8-mile, so I used that as a baseline, then extrapolated it to typical 1/4-mile ET & MPH numbers:
I also used the 32"-tall slicks that came on the car, and calculate an RPM drop of 190 to 210 RPM if you'd switch to a 33" tire

6.80 ET in the 1/8-mile is roughly a trap-speed of 100.7 MPH, extrapolated to the 1/4-mile, this is 10.62 @ 124.2 MPH, and with 4.56:1 gears, 92% efficiency (8% slippage), and 32" tires, you'd need to turn 6412 RPM

6.70 @ 102.2 MPH = 10.47 @ 126.0 ~ 6505 RPM

6.60 @ 103.8 = 10.31 @ 128.0 ~ 6609 RPM

6.50 @ 105.4 = 10.15 @ 128.0 ~ 6711 RPM

6.40 @ 107.0 = 10.00 @ 132.0 ~ 6815 RPM

6.30 @ 108.7 = 9.84 @ 134.1 ~ 6923 RPM

6.20 @ 110.5 = 9.68 @ 136.3 ~ 7037 RPM

6.10 @ 112.3 = 9.53 @ 138.5 ~ 7151 RPM

6.00 @ 114.2 = 9.37 @ 140.8 ~ 7269 RPM

keep in-mind that if your TQ converter is more efficient, you would turn less RPM at the shown MPH, or a higher MPH at the shown RPM

hope this helps some

Yes, that helps a lot and confirms what we thought...I am not comfy pushing the mild 496 to 6900 in the 1/4...they tell me the 33" tire would really work the motor hard once in high gear with a 3200 lb. car...

We are checking now on a 4:30 gear that Strange sells for a 5 series carrier, if that's what I have.....lol...they would be a much better answer with 32" tires...the gears and mufflers are pushing my timeline back another 7 to 10 days...oh well...

Fuzzy,

I plan to be at the points race (I can't believe this is the first of the season due to rainouts) and possibly the Friday T&T. My new car is still not ready so I will be in "old faithful". Hope to see you there.

Dan, I did same calculations, except I used a 4.30:1, and 4.10:1 ratios

6.70 @ 102.2 MPH = 10.47 @ 126.0 ~ 6134 RPM / 5848 with 4.10:1 gears

6.60 @ 103.8 = 10.31 @ 128.0 ~ 6232 RPM / 5942

6.50 @ 105.4 = 10.15 @ 128.0 ~ 6328 RPM / 6033

6.40 @ 107.0 = 10.00 @ 132.0 ~ 6426 RPM / 6127

6.30 @ 108.7 = 9.84 @ 134.1 ~ 6528 RPM / 6224

6.20 @ 110.5 = 9.68 @ 136.3 ~ 6635 RPM / 6326

6.10 @ 112.3 = 9.53 @ 138.5 ~ 6743 RPM / 6429

6.00 @ 114.2 = 9.37 @ 140.8 ~ 6854 RPM / 6535

OK, another update...we are getting closer...I got a vid today on facebook showing my new 496 motor installed and running...woot!...I can't figure out how to copy it so here is a link to the page for those interested...sounds pretty good...

https://www.facebook.com/dan.warren.7121

Also the swing out bar was installed today and the new gears are going in tomorrow...we just might test on Friday night...we'll see...

Those 4:30 numbers look good Glen...6.40/10 flat would suit me just fine...no license needed at that point...

I am picking the car up tomorrow...last thing is to position the seat if needed for my fat azz...then home she comes...can't wait to let her rip!....

The weather cleared so I went to test on wed. night...ran into a problem on the first run...didn't want to do a burnout but finally did...left the line sluggish and the rpm's shot up real fast...ran slow...7.15 in the 1/8th...probably close to a second slower than it should have been...

We found the tranny fluid a bit low and topped it off...plugs looked good and timing was spot on....adjusted the carb a tiny bit and tried a second run...same result...

Looks like the trans or converter is bad...we are pulling both and I will take them back to FTI this week...the trans is an FTI glide about 3 years old...the converter is FTI as well and brand new...we will figure this out and be back out there soon....trying to make a two day event on June 10th....sigh...

OK, another update...tranny was good but I had FTI freshen it up with some upgrades as well...converter may have been too loose so the fixed that...

We tested again last night...same result...went slower than my Camaro...FTI swears 4:30's are not enough gear for the big tire...next Thursday we will take out the 4:30's and put the 5:13's back in...we'll test next Friday night and see...also on Thursday we will pull the top of the motor and check everything including a leak down test just to be sure...

Oh well...this is drag racing....sigh....
