Default 427 Small Block coming together, pics

More pics tomorrow

Dart Little M block:

JE pistons, with the piston dish and the Dart pro 1 CNC Alum heads, the CR is about 10.8:1, 420 grams per piston.

Nice 6.0" H beam rods, they weigh in at 680 grams each.

Beware of the lifter bores being tapered as we just had a new Dart that we had to machine out to .875 to correct the problem with the lifter bores.

And set your head gaskets on the decks and you will see there are useally 7 places around the water holes that have to opened up or there will be a restriction.

And most of the pipe plug holes have to be retaped like the one on the oil pan rail or the pipe plug will only go in 1 or 2 threads.

Good luck with your build Carl

Thing of beauty aren't they!

I have the 350 main journal size. The 427/434's like big flowing heads and single planes.

Here is my original Motown 427 going together.

Default Core Plug Issues

Hi Doug, if I could just pass this one small "tip" along, I would most definitely be "pinning" those core plugs. Especially the "brass" pieces, they don't have the same "retention properties" as their "steel" counterparts.

I'll put a shot below of the very same setup on the "Dart" SB iron unit!

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. I "lost" 2 track only cars in the last 4 years from the core plugs "blowing" out. Most likely from "compression" getting into the cooling sytem! Fortunately no one got hurt, but both cars were destroyed. We still "pin" ALL race units now, have for some years, unless they have "screw-in" core plugs!!! Due to the HP numbers climbing on "street-cars", I've begun "pinning" these also!

The Cometic MLS head gaskets won't let any compression into the jacket. At least that is what I am told.

Intake is an EFI modified Victor Jr. manifold.

Thanks for the other tips, those things were checked and delt with during machining, including sonic testing the walls for core shift.

I will look at plug pinning, I have done drill and tap right next to the plugs and used large head screws as retainers in the distant past, but the pins look cleaner, shouldn't be that hard to centerpunch and drill some 1/8" dia by 1/4" deep holes on each side.

One thing that really helped my cooling was plumbing the rear manifold cooling lines.

It might just be the Motown casting. But the head gasket block coolant holes were smaller. So I enlarged the gasket holes for more flow.

What's the fitting in back of the block going into the lifter valley for? It's not a dry sump block without return passages.....
