Default Stupid Question - Differences between the L98, L82 and L48?

I know the basics - the L48 is a detuned version of the L82 - both of which are found in the C3. And the L98 debuted in the C4. Is the main difference fuel injection?

The reason I ask is for modification purposes - are all the hi-pro parts interchangeable? Eg. cam, headers, heads, etc...

Thanks in advance and sorry for the lame/beginner question :D!!!

Well, I don't know all the details either but here are a couple.
The L98 (I have an '85) is a 2-bolt block with forged pistons. The heads
are nothing special (press-in studs, 1.94 intake valves, 1.5 exhaust).
Starting in about '88 the center bolts holes on the intake were angled
differently and the block went to a one piece rear main seal and the crank
changed to allow the one piece seal.

I'd say the L98 is similar to an L48 with fuel injection. The L82 had a
4-bolt block, steel crank, 2.02 heads with screw-in studs and guide
plates. Of the 3, in my opinion the L82 is the best place to start for
performance mods.

Late `86 L98's and later had aluminum heads. `87 up L98's had roller cams which aren't a "bolt in" swap to earlier engines but roller cams can be used in earlier engines. If you're thinking about improving an earlier engine with later model factory parts, you might want to re-think and look at after-market pieces. That's what the L98 guys do :) .

Ok...since when did they get forged pistons? :p:

When they left the factory....
86 up L98 have cast pistons, 84/85 have forged.

My Helms Service Manual says the '84 has cast pistons. I have seen it stated by others that they are forged. Now, I have my doubts. Who would be the authority on this?

A few owners that I know have found that their 85 had forged piston when they rebuilt them. I looked in the GM Parts and illustrations manual and found 84 & 85 use the same part number and are more expensive than 86 up pistons.

You are talking about the 84-85 haveing forged pistons, I have never heard this but if it is true does that include the early 86 model with the cast iron heads? It is my understanding that early 86 motors are just like the 85. Just curious.

No, early iron headed 86's do not have forged pistons. The part # for the pistons are different and they cost less.
