Default Bellhousing alignment

I'm trying to get my bellhousing's transmission centerline in line with the crank centerline.

I have an LT1 (the opti kind) and a ZF6. That shouldn't matter but I thought I would add it before someone asked. I'm not 100% sure that I'm getting the correct readings because I can't get my dial indicator all rigged up to be perpendicular with the bellhousing. The magnetic base is stuck to the flywheel bolts. The dial went from a max to max of +13 and -17, so that should be about 15 thousandths out of wack.

What offset dowel pins have you guys had the best luck????

I've used these Lakewood dowels before and like them because of the center set screw which locks the adjustment in. Additionally, I use an old SBC bellhousing for the actual alignment process as you can see the effect of the offset dowels as you work. Hope this helps!

That is a lot of run out for a factory bellhousing. You need to have a firm base for the dial indicator. I'd measure again.
