You're gonna like this.
558 lb-ft @ 3500 rpm
474 hp @ 5000 rpm.
And it starts out right off of idle at 500 lb-ft.

You did leave out the LSA but I guessed at 112 degrees, which is probably about right. This is through high flow headers and mufflers.

Compression ratio math with a zero decked block came out to be 11.25:1. It's probably not THAT accurate because I do not know the deck height of a Chevy 400, so I guessed at 0. Anyone have more specific info about that with 5.7 inch rods?

With aluminum heads, that's really pushing it for pump gas, but it might work. You can drop that a bit further with AirFlow Research 74 cc heads.

Your 4+3 will blow up quickly with that motor. That is WAY WAY too much torque for a 4+3, IMO. I would suggest either a Muncie 4-speed, M21 or M22, or better yet a Tremec TKO 5 speed OD.

any reason you are not using 6" rods? That would be my choice over 5.7" rods for a better r/s ratio................

off the topic of that nice engine, But I was in a strong choosing state between the 5.7 and 6 inch rod, yeah 6 inch rod seems to be a much more popular setup, but I did not like the how the pin hole was in the middle of the oil ring, seems to weaken it to me. Thats just my thoughts.

BEARCAT, thank you very much, yes I forgot the LSA and your figure is correct.

Iagree, I am sure we will talk about the compression when I visit my builder today. I really dont want more than 10:1 CR.

My builder is looking for the 6.0 rods, I should know something today. But as WASHINGTON RACER stated, the top ring gets smaller or eats into the wrist pin area so he is looking to see what he can find, I really like the 5/64" top ring myself.

BTW, they will begin boring, decking, balancing etc the 509 casting block on Monday! I am starting to get pumped!

When the compression comes down tha tmay change some and belive it or not, the early year Callaway TWIN TURBO's used the 4+3 tranny.

But if/when it goes, a 6 speed will be installed!

Hey Larry, take a look at your r/s ratio with 5.85 rods. They're a little harder to find, but it gets you the best of both worlds :D That's what I ended up settling in on with my 420!

I am looking for a good reference on different Chevy engines and their compression heights, deck heights, and all specifications. Any suggestions? Because the kids they have running the phones at Summit, Speedomotive, Paw, Jegs, etc. seem to have lost the ability to talk facts with you about compression ratios when you use this crank, that block, those rods and these pistons. All I get is "Sir, we don't have access to that information". Well they used to. I just need to learn how to do those calculations myself, so I don't need their help. Anyone know of any good books I could try?

Hey BEARCAT, I read three books cover to cover
1. SBC Performacne:1982 and later : John Baechtel
2. Lingenfelter’s: How to Build Performance Engines
3. How to Build Performance SBD on a budget! David Vissard

I can mail any of them to you to read if you like, just send it back,,, each book is @ $20.00

Then I spent countless hours on the web so, its a learn as you go thing!

Also I just got back from http://www.indyheads.com and I sprung for the bowl port, short turn radius polish and gasket match for the Dart Pro-1 alum/heads.! Springs for a max of .550" lift out the door for under $1400.00
