502/502 GMPP shortblocks and crate engines
I'm considering building a pair of 502 ci engines for my boat and using the GMPP 502/502 shortblock as the basis. Hard to beat the price for a new block and all forged parts, and for the intended use, the .527"/.544", 224/234 hydraulic roller cams and compression ratios are a good fit.
My question is related to the cylinder heads used for the 502hp/567tq rating. As always, I'd like to increase that a little, and I was wondering if anyone knew the flow rating on the aluminum oval port,110cc, 2.250"/1.80" cylinder heads used.
I'm thinking about going with some aftermarket heads on top of the 502/502 short block if it will need me increased power over the 502/502 crate longblock.

Those are the heads I bought after reading the comparison at CHP magazine. Here's the link to all their flow files http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/techarticles/41598/
Here's a couple pics.....Sallee had the best price when I was shopping....$825 + $47 shipping. Watch GMPartsdirect.com, they'll kill you with the shipping.

Monty, have you looked at the AFR 305s? So far, they look like an incredible head for only slightly more than the GM/EDL ovals. They really seem like a perfect match for the GM crate short block.
Here's some good reading:

Thanks guys. I've always been a small block guy, so all this big block stuff is new to me. The boat came with a pair of stock 330hp 454's, so I'm going to repower it. While it's neat to have 2 engines to tinker with, it costs twice as much so I'm looking to be a little more economical with the boat engines than I was with the Vette engine, plus it needs to be as reliable as possible since my wife and daughter (plus other family/friends) will be on the boat. I'm just looking for about 550hp per engine, but it needs to be able to run at 5000 rpm for extended periods of time, redline would be no more than 5500 rpm with an emphasis on a broad torque curve from 2500-5500rpm.
My options are to rebuild the 454's, stroke them to 496's, crate 502 GMPP shortblocks, or 540 shortblocks. I'd like to keep it around $4000-4500 or less for each all forged shortblock with a roller hydraulic cam.

Mmmm.. 38 Lightning makes me all wet. Have any pictures? Is it stepped or staggered? Don't dissappoint us with your boat buildup, we've come to expect nothing less than wretched excess from you Monty. :D
