1971 Royal Pontiac Trans Am F/S
This Concours winning Royal Trans Am is an excellent representative of The Best of American Muscle.
With the Yenko Camaro and Shelby Mustang, The Royal Pontiac dealership in Royal Oak MI. worked closely with the Pontiac engineers to prepare most of the Pontiac test cars and campaigned Royal's race team. Royal also created high performance combinations for customers.
The Pontiac Historical Society (PHS has certified this 1971 Trans Am as manufactured and delivered by Pontiac to Royal Pontiac in September of 1970 and sold by Royal Pontiac in October of 1970. One of the last of the Royal Pontiac Trans Ams .The Pontiac factory had done their part by increasing the engine from 400 cubic inches (6.6 liters) to 455cubic inches (7.5 liters) and increased the strength of the crank (4 bolt mains) and pistons and concentration on handling with fast steering system, large anti sway bars front and rear and Pontiac's "wide stance". Royal race experience did its part in adding huge headers, and refinement of the biggest Rochester carb with Royal's choice of parts. The cam change was designed to increase valve lift and torque to an estimated 500 ft. lbs..The approximate weight is 3,752 lbs..
This engine has a fresh rebuild by Pontiac and only approx.150 miles to set up the car and large Concours. Royal was well known for the dealership’s race cars and Royal built highperformance Pontiacs for the dealership’s customers.
This Trans Am has Royal Pontiac modifications, was sold by Royal Pontiac when new and is a special and very rare Trans Am. This is a matching numbers vehicle.
Make: Pontiac
Model: Trans Am
Year: Built in 1970 and titled as a 1971
Delivery date: September 20, 1970
Exterior: Cameo White
Interior: Black
Engine: HO 455 cid, race cam, headers. Royal modified Rochester carb. The engine has had a fresh restoration by Pontiac. Only approximately 150 miles since the restoration (not yet broken in). Torque:approximately 500 foot-pounds (not dyno confirmed). The 455 cid Pontiac engine (new for 1971) also has the factory stronger but lighter rods and pistons and the “4-bolt ” main bearings plus an additional 55 cubic inches of displacement over the previous Trans Am engine.
Transmission: Automatic
Performance suspension: The Trans Am has both a front 1.250in. stabilizer bar and a rear 0.875 in. stabilizer bar.
Tuned performance ignition
Owner’s Manual, Service Manuals and copies of documents fromPontiac Historical Services included.

While that's certainly a nice car, and I was a Pontiac fan for a long time, I simply have to ask this question......
You signed up on a Corvette based website, and your FIRST post is to sell a car............and a non-Corvette, to boot????

I personally know the owner of this car and he has three Corvettes at this present time. He is trying to downsize his garage spaces. He is not into posting stuff online on forums such as this but he is a true Corvette enthusiast. I was going to place the ad for him but that is against the rules of this forum hence this is his first post. I know and have driven this car and it is as it is represented in the ad.

Leadfoot4,
Thanks for your looking at the car. This car is one of a small but nice collection of mostly Corvettes and Chevys. None of the collection are normally sold. All being here and used and shown for over 20 years. It just happened that this one is now for sale. I appreciate the opportunity to show it to the members
My "60yearsofcorvettes" is not kidding.
I expect to provide the members useful or at least interesting experiences, maybe from times before most were actively into Corvettes. I can see the members have extensive and varied experience. Mine includes Corvettes from the early days up to competing with Penske when he was driving the Grand Sport in Nassau to the odd Corvettes still here. Anyway, I hope to repay the forum's courtesy over time.

No. We believe it was ordered for American time distance rallys.
The emphasis seems to have been to increase the torque. This would speed up the response time which would help the driver maintain precise speeds and time requirements. Back in the 1950s I was a paid rally driver for VW ( an oval rear window VW but supercharged ), and a nationally ranked rally Corvette (Corvette belonged to the navigator, full road race prep) . This 455 Trans Am with the brutal torque would be a help in maintaining the required speed/time. Also if the navigator and driver got lost this thing could make up time fast. The handling is much better than I expected. Also all the aerodynamic flairs and spoilers are real. As I understand it they were created in the GM wind tunnel for a racing Camaro. But someone at Chevy. declined to put them on the required number of cars and the head of Pontiac took them for the Trans Am cars. The Chevy marketing manager may have been right from a marketing basis as most people thought they were not real

I'd love to see an actual dyno (248 dynojet) on the car.
