J-56 casting numbers
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the correct casting numbers for J-56 front calipers?
I have come across someone with several "2 pin" calipers but some of them may be converted from single pin. I need to verify what is what by the casting numbers.
Thanks,
B-L88

Re: J-56 casting numbers (Brass)
thanks Brass,
Very interesting. I am getting different numbers from the C3 board. Rowdy Rat states that the numbers are the same as standard. Now, I wonder if the difference is in the year of the parts?

According to the parts book I have, there are unique part numbers for "heavy-duty" caliper housings for front, rear, RH, LH, inner and outer. It appears that there are also different part numbers for "heavy-duty" caliper housings for 65-66, 67, and 68-72. Unfortunately, this parts book does not give casting numbers, and the part numbers are useless for your purpose.
I have no experience with J56 calipers, but I assume that "heavy duty brakes" implies J56 calipers.

Re: J-56 casting numbers (Chuck Sangerhausen)
Chuck,
There were three distinct sets of caliper housings. The original calipers were supplied by Delco Moraine and are identified as such on the casting. The casting numbers are as follows:
1965-Early 1967
5465954 (front, inner)
5465952 (front, outer)
5465902 (rear. inner)
5465905 (rear, outer)
Late 1967-Early 1972
5452270 (front, inner)
5452273 (front, outer)
5452281 (rear, inner)
5452284 (rear, outer)
Late 1972-1982
5473795 (front, inner)
5473796 (front, outer)
5473806 (rear, inner)
5473807 (rear, outer)
The casting numbers are the same for both standard and J-56 brake calipers (the housings themselves) within the date ranges given... The part numbers are different because the caliper castings are machined differently.
There is additional information and photos posted over in the C3 forum.
