My May 1980 Corvette Parts Book shows the 1979 dipstick to be part number 3981019. The Parts Book also carries a notation that the dipstick measures 20" from cap to full mark and 21" from cap to add.

It appears that the 3981019 dipstick may be a revision to the 1980 book, meaning that the Part Number may have changed. I think I have a 1979 dated book at my shop. I will try to check the number in the 79 book, when I get in tomorrow.

I don't think the dipstick you have (part number 14094765), is original to the car. To the best of my knowledge, the 8 digit part numbers, beginning with 14, weren't used before 1980. That doesn't mean that your dipstick is wrong, it might just be a later service replacement for the 79 dipstick.

I'll try to see what I can find out for you, in the morning.

My Sept. 79 Corvette Parts Book lists the correct dipstick for the 79 Corvette, as part # 3981019. This is the same number as the 1980 book lists for your 79.

I found the dipstick you have, 14094765, in the GM Performance Parts Catalog. It is listed as a replacement dipstick for use in 1980-86 305's and 350's. This dipstick is listed for installation in the passenger (right hand) side of the block.

The 79 Corvette should have the dipstick installed in the drivers side of the block. 1980 was the first year for the passenger side dipstick. Does your car still have it's original engine, and which side of the block is your dipstick located? If your dipstick is on the passenger side of the block, someone has changed your engine.

The 3981019 dipstick should still be available from GM, at least it was about a year ago. It was selling for around $12. Unfortunately, I think that the correct tube, to go with this dipstick, is now discontinued.

The motor is still original and the dipstick is on the drivers side.. Can you lookup what the part # of the tube should be? Thanks for the help.

The tube listed for your 79 is #460147. The parts book notes that it is 8 3/4", long from the shoulder to the end. The shoulder being the flare in the tube, that goes up against the block.

If you go to GMpartsdirect.com and punch in the dipstick # in the "search" , it appears it is available for $7.54.
