restoring 86 and now drivers side hood wont come up

restoring 86 and now drivers side hood wont come up
when pull hood release in car both sides release pop up about 1 inch
i can lift pass side until im afraid will brea
k idk 7 inches?
driver side wont go any farther
tried the emergency rod from ecklers corvette supplies with no luck
any ideas other than drilling about 3 1 inch holes in hood over dirver side latch and try see if can get it to complete release then?
