Any of you guys remember the Pie Pan @ Peterson and Cicero in Chicago? My mother has old photos of my fathers 62 Chevy II with a straight axle lined up on the Edens Expressway next to a 61-2 Impala. My fathers best friend Gordy ran a 62 413 Mopar. Uncle Paul had a 57 BelAir and then a 421 Pontiac.

Unfortunately way before my time, Theresa and I have gone to the Cascade Drive-In (http://www.cascadedrivein.com/) also on North Ave. I had never been to a drive in till probably 2 years ago, always seen them in movies ect. I think it's a nice concept I hope they become more popular at some point...

Do any of you guys still drive by there and think of all the good times you had ? I pass by there frequently and look at that sad looking McDonalds and see in my mind the westbound left turn lane loaded with hot cars waiting to pull in. The first time I was there, back around '66' a silver/gray chopped Studebaker Hawk was sitting right at the first parking spot so he could see all the action in and out.....just writing this brings back that view in my mind. That's how much of an impression "Skips" made on me. Oh well, that was a long time ago, but it still brings back my youth. Maybe the reason I still listen to 60's music is because of "Skips". It's sad to see that era pass by.

It's still there - Russell's BBQ! A lot of people miss it because the high-rise apartment building that was put on the corner hides it a bit. Still great BBQ pork sandwiches!
Another potential "myth" that I've heard relating to Skips is that they brought a "jet engine" dragster and had people close off the streets down north ave - let 'er rip and then put it up in a truck and drove away. Pretty ballsy if they actually did!

BBQ place was Russells; dogs at Gene and Jude's! I was got my license just about the time Skips was closing; never really hung there. I do remember wishing I did, though! In the early to mid sixties, I was more a Kiddie Land kid!

I never saw any rails on North Ave, I did see 2 in the Polk Bros. parking lot. They were on trailers and were probably just for show. Many of the modified cars could have run in the Gasser or A/FX ( now known as funny car) class at the strip. I saw many 55 Chevys and late model (64-68) Mustangs and Chevelles that had altered wheelbases and straight axles. If you had a really fast car it had to have a hi-lift cam and headers, you could hear them a block away.

Now that's a sound I'll never get tired of....love it.

Living about a mile away , i am sure i would have heard a jet dragster or top fuel car running on north ave . I used to hear cars running all the time on a warm summer night . They were good times for sure nothing you could get away with now . What i remember of the dragster story is it ran a 1/4 mile down grand ave turned the corner pulled in the trailer and disapeared in to the night . Seems to be all urban legends like the blond with the bumber sticker . The wmc is saying she was in grand rapids !

A very good night was starting at the home base. Tops Big Boy in Berwyn. Then off to Tops in Downers Grove to see the rich kids and their cars. If the 56 Ford had any gas left, it was off to Skips to see the fast cars. After that was off to the street races at Kostner and Ogden Ave. " Those were the days my friend. We thought they'd would never end.", but they did.

"One could not grow up in the Chicagoland area without hearing about the legend of Peabody's tomb.
The story was always similar with minor changes in detail depending on who was telling it. Usually a friend would tell you that his best friend's girlfriend's brother knew a guy who drove with a group of friends to an old estate in the western suburbs that had a huge mansion and a hidden church (or mausoleum).
The friend would go on to tell you that a rich old man name Peabody owned the estate and that his tomb was inside the chapel but guarded by monks. Depending on what version of the story was told, the description of the vault or crypt was either a mundane concrete or as extravegant as being see-through with Peabody's corpse inside suspended in oil.
Either way, there was gold (part of Peabody's wealth) hidden somewhere in the crypt. The problem was that the monks would chase down and capture any would be treasure hunters or grave robbers and force them to pray and kneel on everything from broken glass to broomsticks until the sun came up the next morning.
If you were lucky they released you. If you weren't you simply never came back."
"It was saved by the forest preserve district during conservation and restoration efforts at Mayslake. Mayslake is located on Rt83 and 31st street in Oak Brook."???
